Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm & Loose
Slow circles through the shoulders, ribs and hips to Middle Eastern rhythm, releasing the day and finding the soft, grounded posture belly dance sits on.
Isolations
Learning to move one part on its own — a rib slide, a hip drop, a chest lift — the control that makes every later move look clean and deliberate.
The Shimmy
Building the layered hip and knee vibration that gives belly dance its shine, taken slowly until it can run underneath other movement without you thinking.
Arms, Veil & Flow
Framing the movement with soft, snake-like arms and, when the group is ready, a light veil, so the dance reads as a whole rather than a set of tricks.
Combination & Cool Down
Threading a few moves into a short flowing phrase to your favourite rhythm, then a gentle stretch for the back, hips and shoulders to finish.
About Belly Dance Classes in Kent
Belly dance is one of the oldest social dances there is — a warm, expressive style built on isolations, shimmies and rolling, circular movement through the hips and torso. Our beginner sessions teach it gently and from scratch, celebrating control and musicality rather than performance, and they genuinely welcome every age, shape and level of fitness. It is a joyful, low-impact way to move that leaves people grinning, and it suits Kent's mix of market towns and coastal communities beautifully.
Kent is a diverse, spread-out county, and its towns each have their own character — the county-town buzz of Maidstone, the creative, heritage-rich Medway towns of Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, the elegant Pantiles side of Royal Tunbridge Wells, busy multicultural Ashford, and the reinvented coast around Folkestone, Margate and the Thanet towns. Because Dance Centre UK teaches come-to-you across the county rather than from one fixed hall, a belly dance class can land in whichever of those towns is closest to you, in a hall or studio confirmed near your nearest station.
You need no experience, no coordination to speak of and absolutely no special outfit — comfortable clothes you can move in and bare feet or soft flat shoes are all it takes. A coin scarf tied around the hips is fun because it makes every movement audible, but it is entirely optional. The teacher isolates and slows each move so first-timers pick it up, and everyone works at their own pace.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Kent?
Every Body Welcome
Belly dance was made for real bodies of every age and size. There is no ideal shape and no fitness bar — you move at your own pace from the very first shimmy.
In Your Kent Town
Maidstone, the Medway towns, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford or the coast — the class comes to a venue near you rather than the county travelling to one spot.
Control You Can See
Learning to isolate one part of the body builds a coordination and body-awareness that carries into every other kind of dance and movement you try.
Joyful & Low-Impact
It is gentle on the joints and heavy on the fun — a warm, sociable hour that lifts the mood as much as it works the core.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding The Isolations
What You'll Cover
Basic posture, hip drops and lifts, a rib slide and a chest lift — learning to move one area while the rest stays still. This control is the whole foundation.
What To Wear
Comfortable clothes you can move in, bare feet or soft flat shoes, and a hip scarf if you fancy one — the coins make your movements sing but are optional.
Building The Shimmy
What You'll Cover
The layered hip shimmy, hip circles and figure-eights, and the beginning of soft, framing arm movement so the dance starts to look connected and whole.
How It Feels
Like your body is finally doing what you ask. The shimmy clicks, then relaxes, until it can hum away underneath other movement without any effort.
Putting It To Music
What You'll Cover
Reading a Middle Eastern rhythm, matching movement to it, layering isolations over a shimmy, and an optional first go with a veil once the group is ready.
Where You'll Notice It
Your posture and core hold up better all week, and you start hearing structure in music you'd have ignored before — where a phrase turns and lands.
Dancing It Your Way
What You'll Cover
Longer flowing combinations, a little improvisation, and the confidence to interpret a song rather than just execute steps in the right order.
Where It Takes You
A regular class you look forward to, a stronger and more mobile body, and a joyful skill you can bring to haflas, festivals and celebrations around the county.
Belly Dance in Kent FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any experience or coordination to start belly dance? +
None at all. These are true beginner classes and every move is isolated and slowed right down. Coordination is exactly what the class builds, so first-timers fit in from day one.
Is belly dance suitable for my age or body shape? +
Yes. Belly dance genuinely welcomes every age, size and fitness level — it was born as a social dance for real bodies. There is no ideal shape and everyone works at their own pace.
Where in Kent do the classes take place? +
Across the whole county come-to-you — Maidstone, the Medway towns of Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, and the coast around Folkestone, Margate and Thanet. We place the class in the town nearest you.
Is there one central Kent belly dance studio? +
No. Kent is large and spread out with several rail corridors and no single arrival point, so we bring the class to your town and confirm a room near your nearest station rather than running one hall for everyone.
What does a class cost? +
A drop-in session is a flat £8 per person, paid on the day, with no contract and no joining fee. Come along whenever it suits you.
What should I wear and do I need a coin scarf? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in and bare feet or soft flat shoes are all you need. A hip or coin scarf is fun because it makes every movement audible, but it is completely optional — bring one only if you'd like to.
Is belly dancing a good workout? +
It is a surprisingly good core and posture workout while staying low-impact and gentle on the joints. You build strength and body-awareness without the pounding of high-intensity classes, and it rarely feels like exercise.
Can you run a belly dance session for a hen or group? +
Yes — a one-off group session is a popular, feel-good choice and easy to set up at a venue near you, whether in Maidstone, the Medway towns, Tunbridge Wells or on the coast. Tell us numbers, a date and your area.
How far will I have to travel to a class? +
As little as possible. Because we come to your corner of Kent rather than running a single central class, the long cross-county journey a fixed studio would demand is exactly what we are saving you.
