Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Standing Before Stepping

We begin still — feet in first, weight settled, shoulders easy — and only then add a slow plié and rise. These ten minutes are about a body that knows where it is before it travels anywhere.

10–25 mins

Barre Foundations

With a light hold you work the staples — the plié, the tendu, a first sweep of the arms — modest shapes drilled over and over to lay down turnout, strength in the feet and steadiness.

25–40 mins

Into the Middle

The barre goes away and a balance has to hold itself. Out in the open floor the deep stabilising muscles finally earn their keep, at a pace that expects no training behind you.

40–50 mins

Covering Ground

Now you move — a few steps that travel corner to corner and a low, careful first jump, each slowed right down so the timing never runs away from anyone.

50–60 mins

The Finish and the Bow

The last stretch turns to the arms and the carriage of the head — the polish that makes a shape read — before a short révérence and a proper cool-down stretch.

About Ballet Classes in Dundee

Every other style borrows from ballet — its sense of line, its balance, the hidden strength that makes movement look easy. A class for adult beginners takes none of that as given. You spend the opening weeks simply learning to stand well and hold steady, and a single new idea is folded in each week from there.

Dundee has real classical roots to sit alongside. Rachel Harris School of Dance teaches graded ballet across the ages, and Scottish Dance Theatre — the country's principal contemporary company — has been resident at Dundee Rep since 1986, so serious dance is woven into the city. Ours is simply the grown-up beginners' strand those places rarely lay on, taught in the centre and out along Perth Road.

If watching appeals more than dancing some weeks, Dundee Rep on Tay Square stages touring and home-grown work all year, a short step from the centre. Getting to class is easy either way: the station sits on the waterfront, the centre rises to the north of it, and with no tram it is buses or a short drive after work.

Why Choose Ballet in Dundee?

Start From Absolute Zero

The class is designed for adults who have never set foot in a studio. No childhood training is taken for granted, and the person next to you is in the same boat.

Posture You Keep

Weeks of steady barre and centre work quietly rewrite how you hold your spine and shoulders, and that change walks out of the studio with you.

A City That Dances

Scottish Dance Theatre is based at Dundee Rep and visiting companies stop by across the year, so there is real, skilled dancing to study in person rather than on a phone.

Taken at Your Pace

Each exercise flexes to the fitness and flexibility you turn up with; ballet develops both over time instead of asking for them at the door.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

The First Uprights

Getting Going

Where the feet go, how to hold the barre lightly, and a first plié and tendu — the modest groundwork the rest of the term stands on.

Day One Kit

Soft, stretchy clothes and a pair of socks; there is genuinely nothing to buy. Soft ballet shoes can wait until the habit takes hold.

Weeks 5–10

Letting Go of the Barre

Standing Alone

The same drills come back without a hand to steady you, so balance turns into something you own, and short sequences begin to travel.

Cracking the Code

The French names stop feeling like a foreign language once each one is attached to a shape your body can make.

Months 3–5

Your Own Line

In the Centre

Slow adage out in the open, the place where your balance and the line of a movement quietly start to appear.

To the Music

You begin phrasing to the music instead of a silent count, finishing shapes off with the arms and the head.

Ongoing

The Habit Holds

Stepping Up

Longer combinations, tidier turns and enough underlying strength to actually relish them.

Onward

A base that makes every other style easier — and graded classes across Dundee to climb into if the bug bites.

Ballet in Dundee FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Is it too late to start ballet as an adult? +

Almost certainly not. This class exists for adults starting from scratch, and a typical room spans people in their twenties through to their seventies. Nobody is expected to have danced before — and most haven't.

Is this genuinely an adults' class, not a children's one? +

Yes, adults only. Children's and graded ballet is well covered in the city by schools such as Rachel Harris School of Dance; what we add is the relaxed adult entry point, where the whole room is meeting the barre grown-up and green together.

Where in Dundee do the ballet classes run? +

We use partner studios in the centre and further west along Perth Road, so you can pick the side of Dundee that suits your commute. The precise address arrives with your booking, and each room sits near a bus stop or the station.

What do I wear, and do I need ballet shoes? +

Just something soft and stretchy you can move in, plus socks — there is nothing to buy for a first visit. Ballet shoes are worth adding later if you decide to stay, and we will say when.

How much is a ballet class in Dundee? +

Eight pounds a class, handed over as you come in, and that is everything — no sign-up, no block you are locked into. A reduced multi-week rate follows once a regular Dundee slot is fixed.

I'm not flexible or especially fit — is that a problem? +

Genuinely not an issue. Suppleness and stamina are things ballet gives you, not things it asks for up front. The exercises meet the body that walks in, and you never race anyone.

Will ballet actually improve my posture? +

Noticeably. Realigning and strengthening the core is the whole job of barre and centre work, and within a few weeks most people catch themselves standing taller off the floor as much as on it.

Is there good dance to watch in Dundee? +

Yes — Dundee Rep on Tay Square is home to Scottish Dance Theatre and hosts visiting companies across the year, so there is polished work to watch a few minutes from class. Seeing it done well feeds your own dancing.

Can I carry on after the beginners' stage? +

Of course. When the basics are secure we move you up into improver sessions with longer phrases and cleaner turns, and if a graded goal appeals, the city has plenty of options to aim at.
