Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Posture and breath
Soft knees, long spine, shoulders unloaded — the belly dance stance is set up first, because every isolation to come depends on it.
Isolation drills
Hips, ribs and shoulders taught to move independently — slow circles, slides and drops repeated until each part of you answers separately.
The shimmy layer
The signature move built from the knees up, then layered over walking — harder to describe than to do, and the most cheerful ten minutes of the week.
A combination grows
This week's moves joined into a short flowing sequence to music, danced as a group facing the same way — no pairs, no spotlight, no solos.
Slow close
Gentle taxims and stretch to a slower track, letting the hour settle — most people leave standing an inch taller and grinning about it.
About Belly Dance Classes in Cambridge
Belly dance takes ordinary movements — a hip lifting, ribs sliding, a shoulder rolling — and refines each one into vocabulary. Our Cambridge classes teach that vocabulary from silence upwards: isolations first, then shimmies, then the joining of moves into phrases that flow with Middle Eastern and North African rhythms.
It suits Cambridge rather well. This is a city whose most interesting mile — the Mill Road end of town — has always faced in every direction at once, and a dance form with centuries of travel in it fits right in. The class is for every body and every age; there is no costume requirement, no flat-stomach entry exam, and absolutely no performing until and unless you want to.
£8 a session, a scarf at the hips if you fancy one, and rhythm you can keep for life.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Cambridge?
Every body belongs
Belly dance has never had a standard-issue body and never will — the technique works identically at every size, shape and age.
Core work in disguise
Isolations and shimmies recruit the deep core and back muscles continuously — an hour's conditioning that never once feels like exercise.
Rhythm literacy
You'll learn to hear the drum patterns underneath the music — a listening skill that makes every other dance style easier afterwards.
£8 flat
£8 covers the hour, and that's the entire financial commitment — no costume list, no term fees, no equipment beyond yourself.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The body divides
Clean isolations
Hip drops, rib slides and shoulder rolls become separate, deliberate movements — the alphabet from which everything else is spelled.
The first shimmy
It arrives sooner than anyone expects, usually mid-laugh, and from that point on it belongs to you.
Phrases form
Moves that link
Isolations connect into travelling combinations — circles into slides into drops — danced to progressively richer rhythms.
Layering begins
A shimmy laid over a walk, arms floated over a hip circle: doing two things at once becomes surprisingly ordinary.
The music opens up
Rhythms by name
You start recognising the classic drum patterns and matching moves to them instinctively — dancing to the music rather than near it.
Expression enters
Within the same steps, your own phrasing appears — slower here, sharper there. No two dancers in the room look alike, correctly.
A practice, not a course
Depth without end
Veil work, finger cymbals and regional styles wait beyond the foundations for anyone who wants them — decades of material, zero obligation.
Carried lightly
The posture, the core strength and the habit of moving well soak into daily life — the quietest benefits are the ones that stay.
Belly Dance in Cambridge FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Whereabouts are the Cambridge belly dance classes? +
At a studio toward the station and Mill Road end of town, easy to reach on foot, by bike or straight off a train. The precise address is confirmed with your booking.
How much does a class cost? +
A flat £8 per session, paid as you go. There's nothing to buy, nothing to join and no term to commit to.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None. The class begins with posture and single isolations that assume nothing at all, and every combination taught is built from pieces the whole room has already practised.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move in — leggings and a t-shirt are ideal. A scarf tied at the hips helps you see your own movement and any scarf will do. Bare feet or soft shoes both work.
Is there a body type this suits? +
All of them, genuinely — belly dance is one of the very few dance forms with no standard body and no aesthetic gatekeeping. Every age and shape in the room does the same technique and it works on everyone.
Can men come along? +
Absolutely — belly dance has deep male traditions across the Middle East and North Africa, and men are welcome in this class on exactly the same terms as everyone else.
Will I have to perform in front of people? +
No — the class faces the same way, dances as a group and contains no solos, no circles and no spotlight moments. Performance opportunities only ever exist for those who actively seek them out.
What music is used? +
A range across the tradition — classical Egyptian orchestras, folkloric drum pieces and modern Middle Eastern pop — so you learn to dance to the breadth of what belly dance is actually danced to.
When does the Cambridge class start? +
The Cambridge timetable is launching now. Register interest through the contact page or on 07759 656300 and you'll be sent the confirmed day, time and studio for belly dance first.
