Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Carriage first
Flamenco begins in the spine: the lifted chest, the grounded stance and the arm paths — braceo — that make even a standing dancer look like an event.
Footwork ladders
Golpes, tacones and plantas drilled slowly then compounded — the percussive alphabet, built at a volume that surprises every first-timer joyfully.
Palmas and compás
Rhythmic hand-clapping and the twelve-count compás taught as a room — flamenco's heartbeat, learned by ear, hand and stamping foot together.
The choreography
A traditional short form built section by section across the weeks — footwork, marking steps and turns joined into a dance with real Andalusian bones.
Full-volume close
The material run together with palmas from the rest of the room — the closest a Tuesday evening gets to a tablao, then stretch and done.
About Flamenco Classes in Cambridge
Flamenco is southern Spain's great art of controlled fire: percussive footwork, sculptural arms, a proud carriage and a rhythmic system — compás — deep enough to spend a lifetime inside. Our Cambridge classes teach it from the ground up, footwork ladder by footwork ladder, with technique and passion given equal billing from the first stamp.
It is a magnificent style for adults who want their dancing to demand something of them. The percussion is a workout, the carriage rebuilds posture, and the rhythm work is the most satisfying puzzle in dance — twelve counts that click into place one week and never leave. No Spanish, no experience and no drama background required; the class supplies all three.
Each session is £8 flat; proper flamenco shoes can wait until you're hooked.

Why Choose Flamenco in Cambridge?
You are the percussion
Flamenco footwork makes the dancer the drummer — rhythm training, leg strength and pure catharsis in one stamping package.
Carriage for life
The lifted, grounded flamenco posture is the best gift any style gives the spine — and it follows students out of the studio permanently.
The compás puzzle
The twelve-count rhythm system is genuinely fascinating to learn — a lifetime study that starts paying out in week one.
£8 a session
Flat pay-as-you-go pricing with no term commitment — and hard shoes are a later purchase, not a first-night barrier.
Your Flamenco Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Sound and stance
First percussion
Clean single golpes become rolls and simple ladders — the moment your feet first produce that sound is unreasonably satisfying.
Arms awaken
Braceo paths and hand flourishes — floreo — begin their slow transformation from self-conscious to sculptural.
Rhythm takes root
Compás internalises
The twelve-count stops being arithmetic and becomes felt — you start clapping palmas on the right accents without counting.
Footwork compounds
Ladders speed up and syncopate; your feet acquire opinions of their own, mostly correct ones.
The dance assembles
A real form
Marking steps, llamadas and closing remates organise into traditional structure — you're no longer doing exercises, you're dancing flamenco.
Duende glimpsed
Somewhere in the louder passages the style's famous intensity turns up unannounced — briefly, and then more often.
Deeper into the art
Palos multiply
Different flamenco forms — solemn, festive, driving — open their doors, each with its own rhythm and character to explore.
Strength and stillness
The paradox matures: the harder your feet work, the calmer your upper body becomes. That control is the art.
Flamenco in Cambridge FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Cambridge are the flamenco classes? +
At a central studio between Market Square and Parker's Piece with a floor that can take proper footwork. The exact address is confirmed when you book.
What's the cost? +
Each session is £8 flat, paid as you go — no blocks, no term fees, and no costume or equipment list beyond eventual shoes.
What do I wear on my feet to start? +
Any sturdy shoe with a solid heel — boots or character shoes work well for the first weeks. Proper flamenco shoes with nailed soles are a worthwhile purchase only once you know you're staying.
Do I need any experience — or any Spanish? +
Neither. The technique is taught from first principles and every Spanish term arrives with its translation attached; within a month golpe, palmas and compás will be ordinary vocabulary.
Is flamenco hard? +
It's honest — the footwork asks for practice and the rhythm asks for attention, but both are broken into steps a complete beginner can climb. The difficulty is precisely what makes it the most rewarding hour of the week.
How physical is the class? +
Pleasantly demanding — the footwork is genuine leg and core work and the hour moves. Everything scales to your pace, and nobody's stamina is examined at the door.
Will we use castanets or fans? +
The foundation course focuses on feet, palmas and carriage — the core of the art. Castanets, fans and shawls are later delights for those who continue.
What about the music? +
Traditional flamenco guitar and cante recordings, chosen to make the compás audible — you'll learn to hear the structure inside the music, which is half the art.
When does the Cambridge flamenco class start? +
The timetable is launching now — leave your details via the contact page or on 07759 656300 and you'll be told the confirmed day, time and studio the moment the flamenco slot is set.
