Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Ease In, Then Walk It

A light warm-up, then a slow, music-free walk-through of the night's opening dance, so its shape is clear underfoot before any tempo comes into play.

10–25 mins

Steps, Called Aloud

Grapevines, kick-ball-changes, coaster steps and turns — each named out loud the instant it comes around, so you are never left guessing what lands next.

25–40 mins

Turn It Into a Dance

The steps get assembled into a whole sequence, wall changes included, which is what keeps the entire line wheeling steadily around the room.

40–50 mins

Now Add the Song

The finished dance runs to a track — country, naturally, though soul, Motown or a chart hit is every bit as likely depending on the evening.

50–60 mins

A Second, Then Wind Down

One more contrasting dance to stretch the repertoire, followed by a relaxed cool-down to send everyone off warm.

About Line Dancing Classes in Southampton

Hardly any dance lets you arrive completely unprepared and still dance. No partner in tow, nothing to swot up first, and a caller flagging every move the second it happens — you simply track the line ahead and gather it as you go. Our line dancing classes in Southampton roam well beyond country, into Motown, soul, chart-pop and a healthy dose of rock-and-roll.

Southampton's edge is the distance we will cover. Many are content to visit a central studio — and line dancing is already a local habit, with DM Studios over in Northam keeping it on the weekly timetable — but we are equally happy to pack up and bring the class to your own hall: Eastleigh, Hedge End, Botley, or right out to the New Forest fringe around Totton and Lyndhurst. In the city our rooms sit close to the centre, confirmed when you book.

None of the boots-and-Stetson clichés are required to join in. For £8 a night, no membership, a pair of smooth-soled flats that let you spin, and the good humour to shrug off a wrong turn, you are ready. The floor pulls the widest age span we teach — teenagers alongside grandparents in one line — and under-18s have their own supervised sessions.

Why Choose Line Dancing in Southampton?

Solo and Stress-Free

Come by yourself and just follow the caller — every step is named as it arrives, so there is nothing to rehearse ahead and no partner whose feet you must track.

The Class Travels

Beyond the central studios we will run the entire session in a hall near you — Eastleigh, Hedge End, Botley, and out to the New Forest edge at Totton and Lyndhurst.

Way Past Country

Just as often as country, the routines drop onto Motown, soul, chart-pop and rock-and-roll — the soundtrack is far wider than the cowboy boots would have you think.

All Ages, One Line

Because nobody pairs off, line dancing gathers the broadest range of ages we teach — from teenagers to grandparents, everyone facing the same way together.

Your Line Dancing Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Slotting Into the Line

Your First Evening

Grapevines, walks and turns picked up purely by copying along — there is honestly not a thing to prepare in advance.

On Your Feet

Comfy clothes and smooth-soled flats that let you turn. Cowboy boots stay strictly a matter of taste.

Month 2–3

Complete Dances

Full Routines

Steps woven into entire dances, wall turns and all, keeping the line revolving around the floor.

A Wider Sound

Country for sure, but Motown, soul and chart-pop routines cropping up just as frequently.

Month 4–6

Losing the Prompts

Dancing From Memory

Carrying the dances in your own head now, leaning on the caller less and less as the patterns bed in.

Fast on the Uptake

Learning a fresh routine within a single evening as the shared building blocks begin to click.

Month 6+

A Regular on the Floor

A Broad Repertoire

Dozens of dances ready to launch into the moment a track starts, whatever pace it sets.

Run Your Own

Bringing a travel-to-you class to your own group somewhere across Hampshire or the New Forest edge.

Line Dancing in Southampton FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Is line dancing nothing but country music? +

Far from it. Country features, but so do Motown, soul, chart-pop and rock-and-roll — the saloon-and-Stetson picture was shed decades back and never really fit.

Do I have to bring a partner? +

Never, which is half the appeal. Everybody faces one way in lines, so you can rock up solo every week and drop straight in without pairing off with a soul.

Can an outright beginner manage night one? +

With ease. Each dance is walked slowly and called as you dance it, so nothing needs memorising beforehand — most people get through a whole routine on their first evening.

Would you come out to Eastleigh, Hedge End or the New Forest? +

Gladly — travelling to you is a big slice of what we do. Hand us a group and a hall and we will put on a session in Eastleigh, Hedge End, Botley or out toward Totton and Lyndhurst.

Where in Southampton are the studio classes? +

In rooms near the city centre, confirmed on booking. Southampton Central is the easy option for anyone arriving by train, with Westquay and council car parks close by for drivers.

What footwear works best? +

Flat shoes with a smooth sole so you can pivot and turn without catching — grippy trainers tend to grab mid-spin. Leave the cowboy boots at home unless you simply adore them.

How much does a line dancing class in Southampton cost? +

£8 per session, no membership, no contract. Turn up whenever it suits; discounted blocks come in once a regular local class has found its slot.

Is anyone ever too old for it? +

Not here — line dancing draws the widest mix of ages on our books, from teenagers to dancers well into their eighties. Under-18s get their own sessions with vetted staff.

Can you put on a class for a party or group? +

Certainly — a travel-to-you line dancing session is spot on for clubs, birthdays and community groups all over Hampshire. Drop your venue and rough numbers on the form and we will handle the rest.
