Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm and Mobile
A slow, joint-by-joint warm-up on and off the floor, waking up the spine and the breath before anything asks for real effort.
Weight and Release
Drills in giving your weight to the ground and taking it back — the core exchange the whole style runs on, learned in small, safe pieces.
Across the Floor
Travelling sequences that turn that weight into momentum: rolls, spirals, rises and the swing that carries you from one movement into the next.
The Phrase
A set piece of choreography, or guided improvisation some weeks, where the technique turns into actual dancing you can feel rather than count.
Wind Down
A gradual cool-down and stretch, letting the body settle and the breathing come back to normal before you head out.
About Contemporary Classes in Southampton
Contemporary is the movement behind most modern dance-theatre — low to the floor, carried by momentum, built on trusting your weight to the ground instead of bracing above it. It took its discipline from ballet and then let go of the rulebook, so genuine technique sits underneath without any fixed set of shapes you're required to strike. The first thing it wants is honesty in how you move; your build and your flexibility matter far less.
Southampton has a real home-grown claim on this style. ZoieLogic Dance Theatre, founded here by Zoie Golding MBE, makes inclusive contemporary and community work across the city, and the Mayflower Studios on Above Bar Street keep rehearsal and performance spaces running in the Cultural Quarter. You're learning a genuinely working style in a city that actually makes it, a few minutes from stages that programme it.
Expect to work in bare feet — grip matters more than any shoe — at partner studios around the Cultural Quarter and out toward Portswood. The floor takes every age from 17 to 75: total newcomers, returners dusting themselves off after time away, and Highfield students from the University of Southampton. Nothing is assumed of you, and no one checks how far you can bend on the way in. The exact room comes with your booking, a short walk or bus from Southampton Central.

Why Choose Contemporary in Southampton?
Dance That Comes Out Personal
Because the style carries whatever you put into it, no two people's contemporary looks the same. You're chasing meaning and feeling, not a pose held still for a photo.
Strength You Build Without a Gym
Controlling your bodyweight down toward the ground and pushing it back up again is deceptively tough — it fires the deep core and the small stabilising muscles most workouts skip.
A Quiet Hour for the Mind
Moving to the rhythm of your own breathing, often with nothing to memorise at all, nudges the hour toward meditation — the body working while the mind switches off.
A Living Scene Nearby
You rehearse minutes from Mayflower Studios and the Cultural Quarter, with ZoieLogic making work in the city, so there's a real contemporary scene to watch whenever you fancy it.
Your Contemporary Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Making Friends With the Floor
Starting Out
Learning to go down to the floor and back up without bracing your way through it — the first, and strangest, thing to unlearn.
What to Wear
Something fitted enough to move and roll in, bare feet or grip socks, and a warm layer for the slow opening.
Momentum Arrives
Flow
Sequences start to link up as you trust the swing and the rebound, and the movement begins to feel continuous rather than stop-start.
Confidence Low Down
Rolling, spiralling and floorwork stop feeling precarious as the strength and the nerve for them build up.
Stretching Out
Longer Phrases
Bigger travelling sequences and fuller phrases that ask you to cover space and commit your weight properly.
Interpretation
Beginning to colour the same phrase your own way — dynamics, timing and intention that make it read as yours.
Your Own Movement
Advanced Practice
Complex phrases, real improvisation and the freedom to make choices rather than just follow them.
What Comes Next
Watching and, if you like, performing — Southampton's contemporary scene is right there when you're ready for it.
Contemporary in Southampton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to have done ballet first? +
Not at all. Ballet can help you read a clean line, but loads of our Southampton contemporary dancers arrive with none of it, and the technique that actually counts here — release, floorwork, breath — is taught from zero. Beginners are the rule, not the exception.
What does 'release technique' actually mean? +
It's driving movement with breath, dropped weight and momentum instead of forcing it through held tension — yielding to gravity on the way down and using the bounce it gives back on the way up. Most British contemporary training is built on it, and we introduce it gently.
I'm really not flexible — does that rule me out? +
Honestly, no. People assume you need to arrive bendy, but it's the other way round: the flexibility is something the classes give you over time. This runs on weight and momentum, not on how high your leg can go.
Bare feet — so what do I wear? +
Bare feet as a rule, or grip socks if you'd prefer — the point is skin or grip meeting the floor. On top, something fairly fitted that copes with rolling around, plus a warm layer for the calm opening before the pace lifts.
How much of the class is spent on the floor? +
A good chunk — floorwork is the heart of the style. We bring you down to it in stages rather than dropping you straight there, so by the time you're rolling and spiralling you've already banked the strength for it.
Where in Southampton do the contemporary classes run? +
At partner studios around the Cultural Quarter and toward Portswood, all on sprung floors made for rolling and jumping. The exact address arrives with your booking, a short walk or Bluestar bus from Southampton Central.
How much does a contemporary class in Southampton cost? +
A single class is £8, settled when you arrive, with no membership hanging over it. Discounted blocks open up the moment your studio commits to a regular weekly time.
Will I be pushed into improvising or performing? +
Neither is ever forced or sprung on you. Improvisation is led and eased in slowly, and stepping onto a stage is entirely your choice — plenty of people keep this as a private weekly hour and never perform once.
Where can I watch contemporary dance in Southampton? +
You're well placed: Mayflower Studios and the Cultural Quarter venues programme touring and locally made work, and ZoieLogic makes its own here. Once you've found your feet, ask your teacher what's worth catching.
