Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0:00 – 0:10

Loosen Off, Then Walk It Through

A gentle warm-up, and then the evening's opening dance is walked through in silence, no track playing, so its shape settles into your feet before any tempo turns up to rush you.

0:10 – 0:25

Every Move Named Aloud

Grapevines, coaster steps, turns, kick-ball-changes — the name of each is called out the instant it comes round, so nothing ever arrives without warning.

0:25 – 0:40

Assembled Into a Full Dance

Those individual steps get built up into a complete routine, wall turns included, which swing the line round to face a new wall so the whole floor keeps rotating together.

0:40 – 0:50

Bring In the Track

Now a song drops in under the finished dance — country as often as not, but soul, a Motown classic or a chart hit of the moment just as readily — and suddenly the whole thing locks to the beat.

0:50 – 1:00

A Second Dance, Then Ease Down

One more routine in a different style to grow your stock, followed by an unhurried wind-down so nobody steps out into the Plymouth night stiff.

About Line Dancing Classes in Plymouth

Few dances let you arrive with no idea what you are doing and still leave having danced. There is no partner to find and nothing to learn in advance — the caller announces each move as it happens while you follow the line in front, picking it up as you go. Our Plymouth line dancing reaches well beyond country, taking in soul, Motown sides, current chart-pop and a healthy dose of rock-and-roll.

What really marks our line dancing out is the distance we will travel. Plenty are content to make for a central studio near Drake Circus — but Plymouth sits on the rim of a wide rural catchment, so we are just as glad to load the gear into the van and bring the entire evening to a hall right on your doorstep — Saltash across the Tamar, Plymstock, Ivybridge or up towards Tavistock. Your city-centre room is confirmed the moment you book.

Cowboy boots and a Stetson can stay in the wardrobe — not a bit of it is required. What you actually need is a flat, smooth sole you can spin on, £8 handed over on the night, and the good humour to shrug off the odd wrong turn. It draws the broadest age range of anything we teach — teenagers and grandparents in the same line — and under-18s have their own sessions run by vetted staff.

Why Choose Line Dancing in Plymouth?

Arrive Solo, Relax

Come by yourself and just track the caller at the front of the room — each step is named the instant it lands, leaving nothing to memorise up front and no partner's footwork to mind.

The Class Comes to You

Beyond the central rooms, we can run the entire evening in a hall near you — Saltash, Plymstock, Ivybridge or Tavistock — so you skip a slow drive into the middle of Plymouth after work.

Well Past Country

Country is just the first page — on many evenings the routines settle onto Motown, soul, current chart-pop or rock-and-roll instead, a playlist far wider than the cowboy-boot image ever suggested.

One Line, All Ages

Because nobody pairs up, line dancing gathers the broadest mix of ages on our timetable — from teenagers to grandparents, all facing one way together and moving as a single line.

Your Line Dancing Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Stepping Into the Line

Your First Night

Grapevines, walks and simple turns picked up purely by copying whoever is stood beside you — genuinely nothing to prepare or read up on first.

On Your Feet

Comfortable clothes and a flat, smooth sole you can turn on. Cowboy boots are strictly optional and completely up to you.

02

Full Routines

Beginning to End

The single steps knit together into whole dances, wall turns and all, so the line keeps working its way round the room.

A Wider Sound

Country for certain, but Motown, soul and chart-pop dances turning up just as regularly once your feet are under you.

03

Leaving the Calls Behind

Out of Memory

By now the dances sit in your memory, and week by week you need the caller a little less as the patterns bed in.

Fast to Pick Up

Learning an entirely new dance inside one evening, now that the usual set of building blocks slots into place by itself.

04

Part of the Furniture

A Big Repertoire

A whole stack of dances ready to go the second the music kicks in, whatever pace or flavour the evening happens to set.

Run Your Own

Running a come-to-you night for your own group somewhere out across Devon, Cornwall or the South Hams.

Line Dancing in Plymouth FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Will you really come out to Saltash, Ivybridge or Tavistock? +

Gladly — travelling out to you is central to how this class works, and it saves you battling into the centre of Plymouth. Point us at a hall with a group in it, anywhere from Saltash over the Tamar to Plymstock, Ivybridge or Tavistock, and the whole night comes to you.

Do I need a partner? +

You do not. That is a large slice of the appeal, in fact. Because everyone stands facing the same way in lines, you can arrive alone every week and drop straight into the room without needing to pair up with anyone.

Is it just country music? +

Far from it. Country is certainly in the mix, but so are Motown, soul, chart hits and a fair bit of rock-and-roll — the saloon-and-cowboy-boots picture got shed long ago and never truly suited the dance anyway.

Can a complete beginner get through the first night? +

Easily. Each dance is walked through slowly and called aloud as you move, so nothing has to be learned beforehand — most people manage a full routine on the very first evening.

What should I put on my feet? +

Go for a flat shoe with a smooth sole that lets you pivot and turn freely — grippy trainers tend to catch mid-spin and trip you. Only bring cowboy boots if you honestly adore them; nobody else will have any on.

How much is a line dancing class in Plymouth? +

£8 for a session, with no membership and no contract to worry about. Turn up whenever suits you; as soon as a local class beds into a steady routine, cheaper blocks open up for the regulars.

Where are the studio classes in Plymouth? +

In studios near Drake Circus and the city centre, with the exact one confirmed after you book. Coming by train, Plymouth station is the closest, and there are central car parks plus the Coypool and George Junction park-and-rides for drivers.

Is there an age I'm too old to start at? +

No such thing here. Line dancing draws the broadest range of ages we teach — teens right up to dancers in their eighties on the same floor. Under-18s get sessions of their own, staffed by vetted teachers.

Could you put on a session for a party or group? +

Absolutely — a full line dancing session goes down a treat for clubs, birthday celebrations and community groups all over Devon and Cornwall. Put the venue and a rough number of guests on the form, and we will organise the rest.
