Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Posture & Hold

We set up the frame first — the tall, open carriage that makes ballroom look ballroom — and loosen the body into it. Good posture is half of every figure you are about to learn.

10–25 mins

This Week's Figure

One new step at a time, footwork first and on your own, so the pattern is clear before anyone reaches for a partner. We keep it unhurried and repeat until it sticks.

25–40 mins

Partnering It Up

The figure goes into hold, with lead and follow practised through partner rotation. Solo dancers and couples share the floor, and no one is ever stuck without someone to dance with.

40–50 mins

Linking the Steps

We join the new figure to what you already know and travel it around the room, which is where a handful of steps starts to feel like a genuine routine.

50–60 mins

Dance It to Music

The whole amalgamation set to a proper track, run through together, then an easy cool-down. This is the part that feels the most like a real ballroom floor.

About Ballroom Classes in Nottingham

Ballroom is several dances under a single banner — the long sweep of the waltz, the quick snap of the quickstep, the gliding travel of the foxtrot — and nobody meets them all in one night. In Nottingham we introduce a single new figure each session and give it time to settle before the next arrives, which is how those half-familiar Saturday-night routines quietly become your own.

You are just as welcome on your own as in a pair. Singles and couples share the same floor, and we rotate partners through the class, so coming by yourself simply means more faces to dance with over the hour. Anyone who would rather stay with the person they arrived with only needs to say so, and that is no trouble at all.

We travel, too. Couples across Nottingham and the wider county — West Bridgford, Beeston, Long Eaton, Arnold and out towards Newark — hire us for private lessons when a wedding is on the horizon and the first dance is starting to worry them. Our team shapes a routine around your song, your pace and your nerves, and rehearses wherever suits you best.

Why Choose Ballroom in Nottingham?

Come Alone or as a Pair

Singles and couples both fit right in. We rotate partners so no solo dancer is ever left out, and couples who prefer to stay together simply say so.

One Figure at a Time

We add a single new step each week and let it bed in before the next. It is the patient, step-by-step way the recognisable routines end up in your feet.

Wedding First Dances

A first dance looming? Our team builds a routine to your song and your ability and comes to you across Nottinghamshire to rehearse it — nerves handled, no surprises.

Elegance That Lasts

Posture, poise and a proper hold are the quiet takeaways. They stay with you long after the class and turn up every time you next step onto a floor.

Your Ballroom Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Frame & First Figures

Getting Started

The hold, the posture and your first waltz and quickstep figures, taught slowly and clearly so the shapes land before the speed does.

What to Wear

Smart-casual clothes you can move in and smooth-soled shoes with a little grip. Leather-soled shoes are ideal later, but not needed to begin.

Month 2–3

Moving as a Pair

Lead & Follow

The frame and signals that let two people move as one, built through rotation so it never rests on a single partner.

New Dances

A first taste of the foxtrot or a Latin number, widening your range beyond those opening steps.

Month 4–6

Building Routines

Amalgamations

Linking figures into flowing sequences that travel the floor, so the dancing starts to look and feel like the real thing.

Floorcraft

Reading the room and steering a partner smoothly around others — the quietly clever skill that separates confident dancers from careful ones.

Month 6+

On the Floor

Polish & Poise

Cleaner lines, surer timing and the calm to enjoy a whole dance rather than count through it.

Where Next

Social tea dances around the county, a wedding routine of your own, or pressing on into the faster, showier figures.

Ballroom in Nottingham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to bring a dance partner? +

No. Singles are welcome and the class rotates partners throughout, so coming on your own just means you dance with more of the room over the hour. Couples who would rather stay paired only need to mention it when they arrive.

I've got two left feet — is ballroom really within my reach? +

Very much so. We build one small figure at a time and let each settle before adding the next, which is exactly how self-declared non-dancers end up gliding around a floor. Slow and steady is the whole method here.

Which dances will we actually learn? +

The ballroom staples — waltz, quickstep and foxtrot — with Latin numbers such as the cha-cha and rumba folded in as you progress. We rotate through them a figure at a time so your range grows without ever overwhelming you.

We've a wedding coming up — can you teach our first dance? +

Yes, and it is one of our most popular requests. We choreograph a routine to your chosen song, pitched to your ability and your nerves, and we come to you across Nottinghamshire to rehearse it wherever feels comfortable.

Do you come to us across Nottinghamshire? +

We do. Beyond the central classes, our team travels to couples right across Nottingham and the county — West Bridgford, Beeston, Long Eaton, Arnold, Newark and beyond — for private wedding and first-dance lessons in whatever space suits you.

Where in Nottingham do the classes run? +

At partner studios around the city centre and the Lace Market, all a short walk from Nottingham station and the NET tram on Station Street. The exact venue is confirmed on booking, and each is easy to reach without needing to park in the middle of town.

How much is a ballroom class in Nottingham? +

Drop-in classes are £8 a session, with no membership and no contract. Once your nearest studio settles into a regular timetable, discounted block bookings arrive for anyone wanting to commit to a course.

What should I wear, and what goes on my feet? +

Smart-casual clothing you can move freely in is perfect. For shoes, a smooth sole that lets you turn is the main thing; ordinary shoes are fine at first, and proper dance shoes only become worth it once you are hooked.

Is ballroom any kind of exercise? +

More than people expect. Holding a strong frame and travelling a floor for an hour works the legs, core and posture, and a lively quickstep will have you warm and breathing hard. It is exercise that feels like a night out.
