Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Set the Frame
A full-body jazz warm-up to begin — isolating the neck, ribs and hips, then finding the lift and alignment that stop everything afterwards from collapsing into something sloppy.
Move Across the Floor
Travelling steps and turns come next — chassés, pivots, kicks and a first go at spotting — the portable toolkit that slides straight into tap, commercial or any piece written for a stage.
Assemble the Number
The steps get built into a jazz combination with real attitude and clean lines, each shape practised alone and at half-speed long before it has to keep up with a track.
Chase the Detail
Back to the awkward moments — how high the kick gets, the precise beat a turn finishes on — because those small margins are what separate a tidy move from one an audience actually enjoys.
One Full Run, Then Lengthen Out
A single full-speed pass to finish, followed by a long stretch that keeps unlocking the flexibility jazz hands back to you a little more every single week.
About Jazz Classes in Nottingham
Jazz is the machinery underneath show dancing — the kicks, the whipping turns, the leaps and the crisp isolations tucked beneath touring musicals, chart routines and reams of screen work. Our jazz dance classes in Nottingham keep the whole thing down-to-earth and useful, taught a few minutes' walk from the Theatre Royal, the city's ornate 1865 receiving house where the big West End tours pull in.
Take it up and you have got hold of the single most portable skill on the timetable. That spotting, that placement, that core strength — jazz drums them in, and then you meet them again in tap, in commercial, in anything performed to a room. Our floors sit around the centre and Old Market Square, a stone's throw from the Theatre Royal and the Royal Concert Hall; which one is yours gets confirmed at booking.
There is no toe-touching test on your first night and no expectation that you own jazz shoes or turn up with a dance CV — trainers and a bit of nerve carry the early weeks, and the shoes can wait until you are certain. On the adult floor teenagers work alongside dancers past seventy, under-18s train in graded groups of their own, and a class runs to £8 — less than a circle seat at the theatre up the street.

Why Choose Jazz in Nottingham?
The Base Coat for Everything
Sort your spotting, kicks and core control in jazz and they resurface all over the place — tap, commercial, musical theatre — because every one of those styles is quietly built on top of this.
A Touring Stage Nearby
The Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall bring the major musicals and West End tours to Nottingham, and jazz is the very technique sitting under those numbers — picked up minutes from where they are staged.
Trainers Are Fine to Start
No jazz shoes and no dance history required on day one — rock up in trainers, collect the detail week by week, and only buy shoes once you know the style has properly hooked you.
A Strong Footing for Kids
Under-18s learn in separate graded classes with background-checked teachers — a first-rate base for any young dancer who might chase stage or commercial work down the line.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Alignment First
The Groundwork
Isolations and posture lead the way, plus a first batch of kicks and pivots. Honest placement matters hugely more at this stage than speed or looking impressive.
What to Wear
Fitted, stretchy kit — leggings or joggers with a close top — and trainers on the feet. Park the jazz shoes until you are sure the bug has properly bitten.
Turning and Linking
The Art of Spotting
You drill spotting and tackle your first genuine turns, then run them through short routines so the technique starts acting like real choreography rather than isolated drills.
Reaching Further
Kicks climb higher, the seams between moves smooth over, and a bit of jazz swagger starts working its way into how you carry each shape.
Onto the Stage
Fuller Numbers
Longer routines with light, shade and proper expression, danced full-out — the point where clean technique quietly becomes something worth an audience's time.
The Payoff Elsewhere
You catch the jazz foundation surfacing in your tap and commercial work as well, doing exactly the quiet job we always said it would.
Performance-Ready
Fully Polished
Turns that keep their line, shapes that carry to the back row, and the stamina to run a whole number from the first count to the final held pose.
Where to Take It
Our showcases and events, or channelling the technique into the theatre and screen work that keeps Nottingham's dancers busy year round.
Jazz in Nottingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How does jazz differ from contemporary? +
Jazz is the bold, upbeat cousin — born out of stage and social dancing, full of sharp turns, kicks and swagger. Contemporary flows more and lives nearer the floor. If it is bright, punchy and outward-facing you are after, jazz is your lane.
Where in Nottingham are the classes? +
At partner studios around the centre and Old Market Square, a few minutes from the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, with the exact room sorted after you book. Nottingham station and the NET tram are both a short walk away.
I've never danced and own no jazz shoes — is that fine? +
Completely fine. The beginner class is mostly people who have never danced, and ordinary trainers see you through the early weeks. Give jazz shoes a thought only once you know you are staying — we will tell you when the time is right.
I'm really not flexible — does that rule me out? +
Not in the slightest. Flexibility grows across the term rather than being asked of you upfront, and with a solid stretch at the top and tail of every class, whatever range you need arrives on its own.
Is this theatre jazz or the commercial style? +
Chiefly theatre and show jazz — the crisp lines, kicks and turns of a big stage number — with a little commercial flavour folded in. Either way, the technique underneath sets you up for both directions later.
What's the cost? +
£8 on the door per session, with no membership needed. Once your local studio fixes a regular weekly time, discounted multi-week blocks go up beside the pay-as-you-go option.
Will jazz help with other styles? +
Enormously. It sits under musical theatre, commercial and a great deal of screen work, and the touring shows at the Theatre Royal and the Nottingham Playhouse give keen improvers somewhere real to aim it all.
Am I too old to start? +
There is no upper limit worth mentioning. The adult floor runs from teens to well past seventy, the class bends to what your body offers on the night, and we always warm up thoroughly and keep the pace sensible.
Can my child do jazz here? +
Certainly — under-18s learn in separate graded groups with background-checked staff. Jazz plants timing and coordination early, and it makes a great base for any child who might head towards performing later.
