Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Drop the Guard

Before any tease, the body has to be loose: ankles and hips eased open, shoulders unknotted, a slow lap or two of the studio. The bigger job in these ten minutes is a change of face — the day's to-do list gets left out in the corridor while a cooler, more mischievous version of you clocks in for the hour.

10–25 mins

Build the Vocabulary

Bit by bit you gather the moves — the roll of a shimmy, the weight sinking into a hip, the slow arithmetic of a glove easing down the arm. Every one is rehearsed alone, over and over, until it reads as a deliberate choice and not a fidget.

25–40 mins

Sell It With a Look

None of it lands without the acting stitched beneath the steps — a glance flicked at the far corner and abandoned there, a beat of stillness held well past comfortable, a fan that opens only as far as you decide. Get this layer working and a neat run of moves quietly turns into a turn.

40–50 mins

Braid It Into a Number

Everything so far gets woven into one compact routine — some weeks big-band swing, some weeks a torch ballad or whatever's climbing the charts — laid out so the newest face in the room and an old hand land the final pose dead together.

50–60 mins

One Real Run, Then Notes

One wholehearted take, kept dead straight and fully in character, before the room folds into a long stretch and a friendly argument about whose cheekiest second stole — sorry, borrowed — the show.

About Burlesque Classes in Nottingham

Forget the striptease shorthand — burlesque is really the art of making a whole room wait on you, and enjoy the waiting. It runs on wit, timing and a raised eyebrow far more than anything you take off. Nottingham suits it down to the ground: the red-brick warehouses of the Lace Market, once the lace capital of the world, now hide bars, studios and exactly the sort of after-dark character this dance was built for.

Classes happen behind a shut door at partner studios around the city centre and the Lace Market, sometimes north into Hockley — the exact room lands in your booking email. With the blinds down, the mirror is your only spectator. And the question everyone arrives with, answered flatly: your clothes stay exactly where they are, from the first shimmy to the final pose.

You go home carrying poise rather than less clothing — the strut, the mischief, the confidence to hold still and let the quiet speak for you. Come in whatever makes you feel a foot taller and dance in that. Anyone past 17 is welcome, every body and every gender sharing the floor, and hen groups often slot a class in before cocktails in the Lace Market.

Why Choose Burlesque in Nottingham?

Presence That Follows You Out

The knack of owning a make-believe stage seldom stays in the studio. People report it turning up in job interviews, on first dates, in any moment they'd sooner meet chin-up than shrink from.

Timing Is a Skill, Not Luck

That weighted silence before a move, and the reveal that lands bang on a beat — they look like natural instinct and they are nothing of the sort. Each one gets isolated and rehearsed until it runs on pure muscle memory.

Props Come In Slowly

Fans, long gloves and a boa are held back until your footing is solid, then handed over one at a time — no beginner should have to fight three feet of ostrich feather before the basic walk is theirs.

Made for Every Body

Burlesque never cared who stepped into the light — your age, your size, a complete blank where dance experience ought to go: none of it is a reason to stay in your seat.

Your Burlesque Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

The Walk and the Wink

Getting Started

Slow crossings of the floor, the hips freed off, and the loose, confident stance that pulls eyes toward you while pretending it hasn't noticed. Nerve and cheek lead the way; tidy steps can follow later.

What to Wear

Wear whatever's comfortable and lets you move — leggings with a soft top does nicely. A pair of heels stretches the line of the leg if you like the sound of it, though trainers stay on plenty of feet start to finish.

Month 2–3

Building a Stage Self

Technique

Short combinations start forming — a slow glove peel here, a shimmy or a cheeky bump there — and each fragment gets its own little back-story, the thing that makes it read as chosen instead of twitchy.

Your Persona

This is where a persona begins to take shape — you give her a name, a temperament, and a clear idea of what she's announcing every time she walks the length of the floor.

Month 4–6

Owning the Whole Stage

Full Numbers

Routines get longer and start using a prop — a fan, a boa — travelling right across the room and directing where everyone looks through nothing louder than a change of speed.

Stagecraft

Now the finer craft: sitting inside a silence, timing a laugh, editing a track down so it fits the piece exactly — the finishing touches that turn a run of steps into a proper act.

Month 6+

Into the Spotlight

If You Want the Stage

If the pull is there, we can find you a spot on an actual cabaret line-up with live music behind you — nobody pushes, and you go only when you decide you're ready.

A Solo of Your Own

Putting together a solo that belongs completely to you — the choreography, the song, the costume, the character — which is the point studying this quietly becomes performing it.

Burlesque in Nottingham FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do you actually take anything off in burlesque? +

None at all — you stay fully clothed the whole way through. Burlesque is built on how you move and sell it, not on stripping: the carriage, the comic timing, and a tease that only ever flirts with a glove or a glance and never goes past it.

I've never danced in my life — is that a problem? +

Not in the slightest — arriving with no dance history at all is the norm here, not the brave exception. Everything is broken down slowly from that opening walk, and most of the beginners' room is made up of people who've never taken a dance class of any kind. All you need to bring is curiosity.

Where in Nottingham do the burlesque classes run? +

Partner studios around the city centre and the Lace Market, with some up in Hockley — always a private, curtained room, never anywhere on display. The precise address comes through when you book, and everywhere is a short walk from the railway station or a quick hop on the NET tram.

Can men do burlesque too? +

Completely — the Nottingham floor is open to every gender. There's a long history of boylesque within the art, and the class is a relaxed, mixed room where nobody bats an eyelid at who's dancing.

What's the music like? +

Expect a real range — big-band brass, a smoky torch song, and now and then a track lifted straight from this week's charts. Working the tease across that many tempos is intentional; it keeps you from getting stuck to one style of music.

How much is a burlesque class in Nottingham? +

It's £8 to drop in, paid on the night, with no membership to take out and no contract to sign. Once your nearest studio settles on a regular weekly time, booking a block of sessions brings that per-class figure down.

What do I wear to class? +

Wear whatever leaves you feeling good and able to move — most people go for leggings and a top with some stretch. A heel gives a longer line if you have one, though trainers are absolutely fine, and there's no special footwear to buy before your first class.

Will I ever have to get up and perform? +

Only if you decide you want to. Loads of people come purely for the fun of it and never once set foot on a stage; for anyone who does catch the bug, we can walk you slowly toward performing on a cabaret bill, entirely in your own time.

Could we book a burlesque class for a Nottingham hen do? +

Very much so — it's one of the things we're asked for most. A private routine makes a brilliant afternoon before drinks in the Lace Market or a night out in Hockley — add your date and numbers to the form and we'll either hold a studio or bring the whole class to you.
