Wake Everything Up
A jazz warm-up that reaches head to toe — isolations through neck, ribs and hips, and the lift and placement that make each later shape read clean rather than sloppy.
Groundwork on the Move
Kicks, chassés, pivots and a first go at spotting a turn — the portable base that later slides straight into your tap, your commercial and any number with a stage in mind.
Piece It Together
We assemble a jazz combination with attitude and sharp edges, working the shapes on their own and slowly before ever setting them against the music.
Tidy the Detail
Back over the fiddly corners — the height of a kick, the moment a turn lands — because it is exactly those details that turn a step into something worth watching.
Full Out and Wind Down
One confident pass of the combination up to speed, then a stretch that keeps nudging open the flexibility jazz quietly repays week on week.
About Jazz Classes in Cardiff
Jazz is the engine room of show dancing — the high kicks, whipped turns, leaps and crisp isolations behind touring musicals, chart routines and no end of screen choreography. These jazz dance classes in Cardiff keep the whole thing practical and grounded, taught within a stone's throw of the Wales Millennium Centre and St David's Hall, the stages that draw the big tours and the big voices into the capital.
Take it up and you are arguably learning the most transferable thing on the schedule. The spotting, placement and core control that jazz drills into you resurface in tap, in commercial, in anything performed to an audience — and this is a training city, too, with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama turning out performers just up the road. Our floors are in the city centre and down in Cardiff Bay beside the armadillo itself, and you will be told which when you book.
There is no flexibility test at the door and no obligation to own jazz shoes or bring a dance past — trainers and a willingness to try get you through the first few weeks, and shoes can wait until you are sure. Teenagers dance alongside people comfortably into their seventies on the adult floor, under-18s train in their own graded groups with vetted teachers, and a class is £8 — less than a seat in the stalls a few streets over.

Why Choose Jazz in Cardiff?
The Base Everything Draws On
The spotting, kicks and isolations you drill in jazz keep turning up in tap, commercial and musical-theatre work — get them tidy here and the rest falls into place more easily.
National Stages on the Doorstep
The Wales Millennium Centre and St David's Hall pull the big touring shows and concerts into Cardiff — jazz is the craft behind those numbers, learned a short hop from the stage doors.
Trainers Are Fine at First
No jazz shoes and no background required to begin — arrive in trainers, pick up the finer points along the way, and only buy shoes once you know you are sticking with it.
A Strong Start for the Young
Children and teens train in their own age-banded groups with vetted teachers — a solid grounding for anyone eyeing up musical theatre or commercial work later on.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Placement and Punch
Early Moves
Isolations, clean lines and a first set of kicks and pivots. Control and musicality come well before anything fast or showy gets a look-in.
What to Wear
Leggings or joggers, a fitted top and trainers to start. Jazz shoes can hold off until you are certain you are carrying on with it.
Turns and Combinations
Getting Around
Spotting drills and your first genuine turns, dropped into short combinations that finally let the groundwork feel like actual dancing.
More Reach
Kicks go higher, transitions smooth out, and the shapes begin carrying the attitude that gives jazz its particular shine.
A Performing Edge
Bigger Routines
Fuller combinations with dynamics and expression, danced full-out — the moment technique tips over into performance you can feel.
Feeling the Overlap
The jazz base starts showing up underneath your other classes, from commercial through to tap, precisely as promised.
Stage-Ready
Real Polish
Cleaner turns, sharper lines and the staying power to keep a whole routine together from first count to final pose.
What's Next
Showcases, our own events, or channelling the technique straight into the musical-theatre and commercial scene around the city.
Jazz in Cardiff FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
How is jazz different from contemporary? +
Jazz is brighter and more percussive, rooted in show and social dance — spins, kicks and a bit of swagger up top. Contemporary flows more and sits closer to the floor. Between the two, jazz is the more outward, upbeat one.
I've never danced and I don't own jazz shoes — does that matter? +
Not a bit. Beginners are the bulk of the starter floor, and everyday trainers see you through the opening stretch. Jazz shoes only become worth buying once the style has clearly got you — and we will let you know when that is.
Where in the capital are the jazz classes held? +
At partner studios in the city centre and down in Cardiff Bay near the Wales Millennium Centre, with the exact room confirmed after you book. Cardiff Central and Queen Street are both within easy reach on foot.
I'm not remotely flexible — am I out? +
Far from it. The class opens up your range over the weeks rather than demanding it on day one, and every session tops and tails with a proper stretch, so the flexibility turns up in its own time.
Is this theatre jazz or the commercial kind? +
Mostly stage and show jazz — the clean lines, kicks and turns behind a big musical number — with a wash of commercial colour through it. The foundation underneath happily serves either direction you fancy heading.
What does a jazz class cost in Cardiff? +
£8 at the door, per class, with no membership to sign. Once your nearest studio pins down a weekly slot, discounted multi-week blocks turn up alongside the pay-as-you-go option.
Does jazz lead anywhere else? +
Plenty of places. It props up musical theatre, commercial routines and stacks of screen work, and Cardiff's touring stages and busy filming scene give keen improvers somewhere real to aim all that technique.
Is there an upper age limit? +
Not in practice. The adult floor runs from teenagers to dancers past seventy, and the style flexes to whatever you bring on the night. We keep the pace reasonable and warm the body properly first.
Can my child take jazz in Cardiff? +
Yes — juniors and teens have their own age-banded classes with vetted teachers. It lays down coordination and musicality early and makes ideal groundwork for anyone with a stage in their sights.
