Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

First 10 min

Stand and hold

Before any steps we set your posture and a comfortable closed hold — shoulders down, a light frame — so the partnership feels balanced from the first bar.

10–20 min

The box on your own

You walk through the basic box step solo, feeling the rise and fall and the slow-quick-quick, so the pattern settles into your feet.

20–35 min

Joining as a couple

We pair up and rotate, sharing the frame so leading and following becomes a conversation of gentle pressure rather than pushing.

35–50 min

Travelling the line

The box opens into a moving waltz that circles the room, learning to give way and follow the line of dance.

Last 10 min

Music together

The steps run to a real waltz, so you finish having travelled the floor as a couple, not just marked patterns in place.

About Ballroom Classes in Bath

Ballroom is partner dancing with a frame and a travelling line — waltz, quickstep, a little foxtrot — and it is far more learnable than the competition footage suggests. Our Bath beginner classes strip it back to posture, a comfortable hold and the rise-and-fall of a basic box step, then build outward once that feels natural.

Bath is arguably the right place in Britain to take up ballroom. The Georgian Assembly Rooms, opened in 1771, were purpose-built for the formal balls of eighteenth-century society — much of the city was laid out, in part, around dancing. We take that heritage as inspiration rather than a booked venue, reviving the idea of a proper social dance for a present-day floor, where the aim is simply to move well with a partner and enjoy it.

There is genuine ballroom pedigree in the city to point you toward: Viva La Dance teaches ballroom, Latin and Argentine tango to recognised ISTD and IDTA syllabuses in the area, and we are happy to suggest routes like that for anyone who wants to go further. We are not affiliated and do not pass on contact details. Our own beginner floor sits centrally near George Street and Queen Square; drivers usually do best leaving the car at the Lansdown or Odd Down park-and-ride, since the streets around the centre are steep, cobbled and short of easy parking.

Why Choose Ballroom in Bath?

Rotation built in

Partners change through the hour, so you learn to dance with anyone and turning up on your own is completely normal.

Rise and fall first

We settle the posture, frame and gentle rise-and-fall before any flourish, because that is what makes a couple look at ease.

Made for occasions

Ballroom is the dancing that comes good at weddings, cruises and anniversaries — a practical skill with a bit of glamour.

Flat £8 per class

One price on the night, no membership and no term to commit to — try a week and decide for yourself.

Your Ballroom Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

1

First month

A comfortable hold

The closed frame stops feeling awkward and starts feeling supportive, which is where relaxed ballroom begins.

Rise and fall

The gentle up-and-down of the waltz appears in your knees and feet rather than being something you have to think about.

2

Moving as a pair

Clear leading

Leads learn to steer with the body early and softly; follows learn to read that and travel with it.

The line of dance

You begin to move anticlockwise round the room, giving way to other couples without losing your step.

3

Widening the repertoire

A second dance

Once the waltz is comfortable we add the brisk skip of the quickstep or the smoothness of a social foxtrot.

Turns and sway

Natural turns and a touch of sway give the dancing shape, so it flows around corners rather than stopping.

4

On a social floor

Ready for the occasion

You can take to a floor at a wedding or a function and genuinely enjoy it rather than dread the first dance.

Somewhere to grow

We point you toward Bath's established ballroom teaching if you catch the bug and want the full syllabus.

Ballroom in Bath FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I have to bring a partner? +

No. We rotate the room through the hour so you dance with a range of people, and coming alone is genuinely the norm. Bring a partner by all means if you would rather stick together.

I have two left feet — is ballroom realistic? +

It really is. The beginner class starts from standing still and a single box step, broken down slowly, so-called two left feet and all. Nearly everyone surprises themselves by the end of the first hour.

What's the cost? +

A flat £8 per session, settled on the night. No membership, no sign-up fee and no block — you pay only for the classes you attend.

What should I wear and bring? +

Smart-casual clothes you can move in and shoes with a smooth sole that lets you glide and turn — a small heel is fine but not required. Bring water for the warmer part of the hour.

Which dances will I learn? +

We begin with the waltz, because its rise and fall teaches the fundamentals cleanly, then add the quickstep and a social foxtrot as the hold and timing settle.

Where in Bath do you teach ballroom? +

Centrally, near George Street and Queen Square, within an easy walk of Bath Spa station. We confirm the precise venue at the point of booking.

How does this compare to a syllabus ballroom school? +

Ours is a relaxed social beginner class with no medals or exams. If you want graded work, Bath has established teaching — Viva La Dance covers ballroom, Latin and tango to ISTD and IDTA syllabuses — and we are glad to point you that way.

Getting there and parking? +

Bath Spa station is central. Driving in, the Lansdown or Odd Down park-and-ride spares you the steep, cobbled, tightly parked streets near the centre. There is no tram in Bath, so plan for train, bus or park-and-ride.

How do I book a first class? +

Pop your name and a contact into the form below. Within one working day you will hear back with the upcoming beginner date, the address and directions.
