Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Centre and align
We start standing tall away from the barre — feet parallel, weight even, ribs settled — so you feel where your body stacks before any French words arrive.
At the barre
Holding the barre for balance, we work pliés and tendus slowly, letting the ankles, knees and hips warm through in order.
Positions and port de bras
You learn the five foot positions and a soft carriage of the arms, checking each against the mirror rather than racing to the next.
Into the centre
We step away from the barre for a simple balance and a gentle chassé across the floor, so the technique has to hold on its own.
A short enchaînement
The steps link into a brief sequence set to piano, giving you a taste of ballet as dancing rather than drills.
About Ballet Classes in Bath
Adult ballet is one of the most forgiving ways back into moving with intention: a barre to hold, a slow warm-up, and a vocabulary of positions that has barely changed in two centuries. Our Bath beginner classes treat it as training rather than performance — you build turnout, posture and control at a pace that suits a room of grown-ups, most of whom have never stood at a barre before.
There is a pleasing symmetry to taking up ballet here. Bath's Georgian Assembly Rooms, opened in 1771, were built for formal social dancing, and that same upright carriage and measured line runs straight through classical technique. When we talk about holding a long, clean line through the arms, we point people at the great sweep of the Royal Crescent — one unbroken curve of honey-coloured Bath stone — as the picture to carry in the body.
You will find dedicated children's and vocational schools in the wider area — Bath School of Dance, running since 1972, teaches out at Combe Down and Bradford-on-Avon rather than in the city centre — but our sessions are aimed squarely at adult beginners in the middle of town. We teach near SouthGate and Queen Square; if you are driving, the Charlotte Street car park or a Lansdown park-and-ride saves you wrestling with the hills and cobbles in soft ballet shoes.

Why Choose Ballet in Bath?
Posture you keep
The turnout, lift and alignment you drill at the barre carry straight into how you stand and walk long after the hour ends.
Strength without strain
Ballet builds deep core and leg control through slow, controlled movement — demanding, but never jarring on the joints.
A real vocabulary
You leave knowing the positions and the terms, so any drop-in ballet class anywhere suddenly makes sense.
£8 a class, no term fees
Pay per session on the night — no expensive term up front and no commitment beyond the week you attend.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The first month
Barre basics
Pliés, tendus and a steady relevé stop feeling foreign, and your balance at the barre grows noticeably steadier.
Naming it
The five positions and a handful of French terms become second nature, so instructions no longer need translating.
Finding control
Turnout from the hip
You learn to rotate from the hip rather than forcing the feet, which is where safe, honest turnout comes from.
Soft, precise arms
Port de bras stops looking stiff — the arms lengthen and flow while the shoulders stay quietly down.
Away from the barre
Centre balance
Balances you could only manage holding the barre begin to work in open space, on your own line.
Travelling steps
Chassés and a first gentle turn carry you across the floor with control rather than momentum.
Dancing it
Linking steps
Short enchaînements join the vocabulary into phrases, and ballet begins to feel musical rather than mechanical.
Carrying the line
That long Royal Crescent line finally shows up in your own arms and spine, on the floor and off it.
Ballet in Bath FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Am I too old to start ballet? +
Not remotely. Our classes are built for adult beginners, plenty of them starting in their forties, fifties and beyond. We train for control and enjoyment, not for pointe work or auditions, so you move ahead at a grown-up's pace.
Do I need any dance experience? +
None at all. The beginner class assumes you have never held a barre, and we introduce one idea at a time and repeat it, so nothing is taken for granted.
What do I wear for ballet? +
Anything you can bend and move in — leggings and a fitted top are ideal. Soft ballet shoes are perfect, but socks or bare feet are fine to begin, so there is nothing to buy just to try a class.
How much does a class cost? +
A flat £8, settled on the night. There is no term fee, no registration and no block booking — you pay only for the weeks you come along.
Will it actually make me fitter? +
Yes, in a quiet but real way. Ballet builds core stability, leg strength and flexibility through slow controlled work, and most people notice their posture improving within a few weeks.
Where in Bath are the ballet classes? +
In the city centre near SouthGate and Queen Square, an easy walk from Bath Spa station. You get the precise studio details when you book in.
Is this the same as a children's ballet school? +
No. Schools such as Bath School of Dance, out at Combe Down and Bradford-on-Avon, run graded children's and vocational training. Ours is an adult beginner class in the centre of town, with no exams and no uniform.
How do I get there and park? +
Bath Spa station is central and level into the shopping streets. Driving in, the Charlotte Street car park or a Lansdown park-and-ride is far less stressful than the hilly, cobbled lanes near the Abbey. Bath has no tram or metro.
How do I book? +
Drop your details into the form on this page and we will be in touch within a working day, letting you know the next start date for beginners and exactly where to go.
