Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Switch It On
Ten minutes to lift the heart rate and switch the swagger on. Joints loosened, energy already aimed outward - from the very first count this style plays to a camera that isn't there yet, so even the warm-up looks up and out.
Read the Track
Before any steps land, we pull the track apart - its hits, its silences, the pockets a move can sit inside. Once your ear knows the song, the counting mostly sorts itself out and the routine has something to grip.
This Week's Piece
The week's choreography, handed over in bite-size chunks and built up slowly. We tidy each shape at a crawl before speeding it, so nobody's left trailing the music by half a phrase when it all joins up.
Aim It Somewhere
With the moves in the body, we give them somewhere to go. Fix on a single point across the room and dance at it - the steps for accurate and the steps for commanding are usually identical; everything separating them is projection.
Full Tilt, Then Down
We close on a couple of all-out run-throughs, played to the front like the shoot is real, before easing everything back down. Filming only happens if everyone's happy, and seeing yourself on playback - should you want to - is where the biggest leaps come.
About Commercial Classes in Northampton
Commercial dance is pop music made visible - the steps in a chart video, the opener of a stadium tour, the locked-in unison behind a Saturday-night TV performance. Most people have copied reams of it in the kitchen already, just without names for any of the moves. Here you pick up the names, make the moves your own, and learn that where you throw your energy counts every bit as much as your feet, because the whole form is built for a camera.
Northampton hands you a genuine scene to plug into. Dexterity Dance works out of Great Houghton under Estha Jones, with a street and hip-hop programme and named teachers; Mayhew School folds street together with acrobatics; and Streets Ahead has a big, loyal local following. There's a real appetite for camera-facing dance here, and a University of Northampton crowd by the Waterside campus with no fear of being filmed.
It helps that this is a town with an alternative streak in its bones - Bauhaus formed here and more or less invented goth, so Northampton has never been shy of a bold, theatrical look. We use studios around the town centre and out toward Great Houghton, the exact one sent when you book. The station sits west of the middle of town; drive to a fringe studio and leave a margin on Saints match days, when Franklin's Gardens pulls the traffic.

Why Choose Commercial in Northampton?
A Way Into Group Dancing
This is the on-ramp to dancing in a crew. Northampton actually has teams and showcases you can graduate into - Dexterity and Streets Ahead among them - so there's a clear next step once one class a week no longer scratches the itch.
Cardio in Disguise
Push through a full routine at pace and it adds up to a serious workout, minus any of the gym's grimness. You leave hot, out of breath and beaming - and, over the weeks, noticeably fitter than you meant to get.
Taught by People on the Circuit
The person leading earns their living from exactly this - shoots, live shows, TV spots - which means the routines arrive shaped by real work rather than tidied up to be classroom-friendly.
You Start Hearing Music Differently
Half the craft is timing - spotting the hit, the breakdown and the sudden hush in a song, then pinning movement to them. Once that sense sharpens it feeds every other style you touch, well beyond this class.
Your Commercial Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Clean Comes First
Slow and Accurate
These first weeks are about getting it right, not getting it fast. Lock a move down clean and controlled, and the tempo climbs on its own soon enough - hurrying now buys you nothing at all.
What to Wear
Clothes you're happy to sweat in and flat trainers with a smooth sole that slides rather than grips. Bring layers to shed as you heat up, and a full water bottle - you'll get through it.
Finding the Swagger
Texture Over Counts
Counts turn from a to-do list into something with attitude - hits punched right on the beat, silences held deliberately, the bit of flavour that separates real commercial from a pale imitation of it.
Quicker on the Uptake
Snapping up routines quickly is trainable, and this is roughly when you notice it clicking - steps that baffled you at the start now go in within a couple of attempts.
Selling the Routine
Projection
Now it's less about recalling the steps and more about performing them - chin up, playing to an imaginary camera, holding your output steady from first count to last rather than dipping in the middle.
Longer, Trickier Sets
The pieces grow longer and the transitions get more awkward, creeping up on the kind of thing a real shoot or a live set would put in front of you.
Ready for a Crew
Sharp Under Pressure
You stay accurate when the heat's on, keep your line in unison and pick up fresh material fast - precisely the toolkit a performance team or a camera routine asks for.
Where It Leads
From here the town's performance teams, showcase nights and open auditions are the natural progression - whoever teaches you will nudge you toward whichever ones are worth the time.
Commercial in Northampton FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Can a total beginner keep up? +
With ease - the whole thing is pitched at newcomers. Nobody's assumed to have danced before, and picking routines up at speed isn't a prerequisite; it's one of the things the class quietly teaches you over the weeks.
How's commercial different from street or hip-hop? +
Think of street and hip-hop as the foundation - the freestyle, the heritage, where it all began. Commercial polishes that for a screen, tidying the loose edges into matching lines made to look good on film. The two bleed into each other, and loads of dancers do both.
What music will we dance to? +
Whatever's dominating the charts, in the main - pop shot through with R&B and Afrobeats, plus the one song everybody can't escape that fortnight. We rotate them so often the material never goes stale, and given the town's leftfield music history, the odd curveball track finds its way in.
Where in Northampton are the classes held? +
We hire rooms in and around the town centre, plus a couple out Great Houghton way; the exact one lands in your inbox once you're booked. Because the rail station is over on the west side, most people arrive by Stagecoach bus or taxi - handy on Saints days, when parking near Franklin's Gardens vanishes.
Will we be filmed? +
As a rule just the closing run-through, and only so you can see it back - nothing shows up a lazy arm faster than your own footage. Everyone's asked beforehand, joining in never rides on saying yes, and no clip leaves the room unless all of you agree.
How much does a commercial class in Northampton cost? +
A class is eight pounds, cash or card at the door. There's no membership and nothing that auto-renews behind your back - you cover the hour you attend, full stop. Once a fixed weekly slot settles at the studio closest to you, a prepaid block works out slightly cheaper per session.
What should I wear and bring? +
Loose, stretchy gear you don't mind sweating through, a smooth-soled pair of trainers, and a bottle of water - that's the lot. Leave anything rigid or specialist at home. And if it's dancing in heels you actually want, that's a separate class.
Once I'm ready, where can I perform? +
Plenty of options. The city keeps busy with crew nights, showcases and events - Dexterity and Streets Ahead run their own teams - and we put on low-key showcases as a soft first outing. Whoever teaches you will steer you toward the right one when the time comes.
Can we book a commercial class for a hen or group in Northampton? +
For sure - one of the group and hen bookings we get asked for most is a music-video number set to whatever act the party can't stop playing. Add your group size and a date to the form, or take a look at our commercial hen party page.
