Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm and Isolated
We lift the heart rate, then dive into isolation work — moving the head by itself, the ribs by themselves, hips and shoulders drawn in opposite directions. It seems minor, and it quietly props up everything else you will do today.
Drills Corner to Corner
Compact combinations travelled on the diagonal — chaînés turns, jazz squares, battements and an early crack at a tidy pirouette. The improvement hides itself session to session and only shows up when you compare a few weeks.
Across the Floor
Space opens up for the big travelling steps — leaps, chassés, wide reaching lines that want you to fill the room and commit to every shape. That projection is exactly what carries jazz to the furthest seat in the house.
A Number to Perform
We take a compact piece straight out of musical theatre, teach it in small phrases, then layer on light and shade, sharpness and the bold, look-at-me delivery jazz simply will not do without.
Full Out, Then Down
You will dance it right through twice, and the second attempt almost always tops the first, before a measured cool-down stretch that sends you off supple rather than seized up.
About Jazz Classes in Edinburgh
Nowhere in Britain performs quite like Edinburgh. Every August the city hosts the world’s largest arts festival, and the rest of the year its stages stay busy — the Playhouse, the biggest working theatre in the whole country, plus the Festival Theatre and the King’s, all pulling in the big touring musicals. Jazz is the language most of that stage dancing is spoken in, and our jazz dance classes in Edinburgh teach the real thing.
That means isolations, turns, kicks and travelling lines, with the performing treated as part of the craft rather than a bit of gloss on top. It is theatrical by design — you learn to project, to hold a look, to sell a moment to whoever is sitting furthest away.
Sessions run from partner studios across the city centre and the Old Town, where the Fringe leaves rehearsal space everywhere, with the address arriving in your confirmation. Every one is a short walk from Waverley or Haymarket; drivers will find multi-storeys at St James Quarter or Castle Terrace, though the train is the easy way in.

Why Choose Jazz in Edinburgh?
The Stage Language
Isolations, turns and kicks are the alphabet of West End and touring choreography — the same vocabulary the shows at the Playhouse and Festival Theatre are built from. You are learning the real thing, not a watered-down version.
It Sharpens Everything
Spend a few months on jazz and you will notice every other style you dance getting cleaner — steadier balances, longer lines, sharper musicality. It is the reason so many dancers are told to start here before anything else.
Strength and Stretch Built In
You do not need to arrive bendy or gym-fit — the kicks, jumps and across-the-floor work quietly build both the range and the strength as the term goes on, so there is nothing extra to sign up to.
Performing Comes First
Every sequence is treated as a small show right from the start, which means the nerves wear off quickly — usually well before the routines start asking anything really difficult of you.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Isolations and a Combo
Getting Going
You will start with isolations, a couple of jazz squares and a brief sequence to hang them on. Height and speed do not matter at this stage; what counts is a tidy shape you can repeat cleanly two times in a row.
What to Wear
Close-fitting kit you can stretch and kick in, plus trainers or bare feet to begin. You will not need jazz shoes for a while yet, and we will tell you exactly when that time comes.
It Cashes In
Turns Hold
All that early technique starts to bank. Your first pirouettes stay upright, your extensions reach higher, and the travelling sequences turn from the part you feared into the part you look forward to.
Playing With Music
You begin experimenting with pauses, accents and the satisfying hit of a move landing precisely on the beat — the point where jazz starts having a conversation with the music instead of merely following it.
Strength Shows
Power Arrives
The conditioning you did not notice happening starts to pay out — you land more softly, hold a balance for longer, and kick noticeably higher than you could at the start.
Character
You will perform whole routines with purpose and a personality of your own, learning to make the dancing carry all the way to the person in the furthest seat.
Where It Leads
Stacking Styles
From here you might add tap, commercial or contemporary on top of your jazz foundation, work toward audition level if you catch the ambition, or simply be the one who lights up the dancefloor at the next wedding.
Onto a Stage
In a festival city there is never a shortage of showcases and stages — from Fringe slots to end-of-term performances — for a routine that is ready to be seen.
Jazz in Edinburgh FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I am a total beginner — is jazz the wrong place to start? +
Honestly, it is one of the best places to begin. The style teaches the foundations that other classes take for granted, and the starter group assumes nothing — as long as you can hold a rhythm on the spot, you will manage fine.
Where are the Edinburgh classes? +
Partner studios across the city centre and the Old Town, with the exact spot named in your booking email. Each is a few minutes on foot from Waverley or Haymarket, and drivers will find paid multi-storeys around St James Quarter and Castle Terrace.
What should I wear, and do I need jazz shoes? +
Fitted, flexible clothing and clean trainers work perfectly, or you can dance barefoot early on. Proper jazz shoes are not needed until you are several months in, and we will give you clear warning before that is a cost.
I am not flexible at all — does that rule me out? +
Absolutely not. Turning up keen matters far more than being bendy — the flexibility develops through the warm-up and stretch each week, and there is no correct height for a kick; it goes as far as your leg goes that day.
How much is a class? +
A single class is £8, settled up on the night — no membership and no sign-up cost. When your studio confirms a regular weekly slot, you will be able to buy blocks at a reduced rate.
How is jazz different from contemporary? +
The two pull in opposite directions: jazz sends its energy upward and outward, crisp and pointed at the crowd, while contemporary drives down into the ground, led by weight and flow. Learning one makes the other easier to read.
I would be nervous performing — is that dealt with? +
It is designed in. Every combination is rehearsed as a small performance from the very first week, so the nerves fade early — usually well before the choreography turns properly hard.
What ages is the adult class for? +
It is open to adults from 17 right up to 75, and we mean the full range. The style adapts to the body in front of it — there is an easier version of every jump and kick that is still unmistakably jazz.
Can this lead somewhere, or is it just for fun? +
Entirely up to you. Because it is the style most stage auditions use, there is a real route toward showcases and formal training if you want it — though honestly, the majority come along purely for the enjoyment.
