Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up to a Film Track
We loosen up to an actual Bollywood number so the energy is there from the first minute — shoulders, wrists and hips all wake up together.
Footwork & the Bhangra Bounce
You learn the springy, grounded steps and the shoulder-driven bounce that give bhangra-flavoured Bollywood its unmistakable lift.
Hands & Expression
We break down the classical hasta hand gestures and the open facial expression that make the movement tell a story rather than just fill the beat.
Formations & Travelling
Moving as a group, we try the sweeping travelling steps and simple formations that make film routines look so full and celebratory.
The Full Routine
Everything comes together into a short, high-spirited sequence danced to the track — a proper taste of a Bollywood number.
About Bollywood Classes in Blackburn
Bollywood dance is the big-hearted, big-smiling style you see light up Hindi cinema — a joyful blend of Indian classical hand gestures, Punjabi bhangra folk energy and modern film choreography, all set to music that makes standing still feel impossible. Our Bollywood classes in Blackburn are welcoming beginner sessions for adults, open to everyone regardless of background.
Blackburn has genuine, long-established British South Asian communities, and just up the road Blackburn Museum's South Asian Gallery tells that story properly — so we teach this dance with knowledge and specifics rather than as a generic 'exotic' theme. That means naming what we are actually doing: the graceful hasta hand gestures that come from classical Indian dance, the bouncing shoulder-and-arm drive of bhangra from the Punjab, and the way film choreography stitches the two together.
You do not need any heritage or experience to join — just a willingness to smile and move. We start with the footwork and the signature bounce, add the expressive hands and facial expression that carry the story, and build toward a full, upbeat routine you will be humming for days.

Just £8 a session, paid when you come. No membership, no term commitment and no special outfit required.
Your Bollywood Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Catching the Energy
The bounce
You get the grounded, springy quality of the steps first, because that lift is the heartbeat of Bollywood dancing.
Feeling the music
We help you hear the driving rhythm of a film track and let it carry you rather than counting rigidly.
Speaking With the Hands
Classical gestures
You learn a handful of the hasta hand shapes from Indian classical dance and what they mean, adding elegance to the energy.
Face and eyes
Expression is half the dance in Bollywood, so we practise letting the face join in instead of concentrating too hard.
Dancing as a Group
Formations
Simple lines and shapes teach you to move with the room, the way a film's ensemble fills the frame.
Travelling steps
Sweeping steps across the floor give the routine its celebratory, going-somewhere feel.
Owning a Number
A whole routine
You can dance a full, upbeat sequence from start to finish, footwork and hands and expression all working together.
Where it goes
Some students love performing at community and family events; others just come back weekly for the joy and the fitness.
Bollywood in Blackburn FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a South Asian background to join? +
Not at all. Our class is open to absolutely everyone and is a genuinely mixed room that mirrors Blackburn itself. We teach the traditions with respect and knowledge so that whoever you are, you learn the real thing.
I have never danced before — will I manage? +
Yes. This is a beginner class and we assume no experience. Every step, gesture and formation is broken down slowly, and the upbeat music makes it easy to relax into.
What should I wear? +
Comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in, and trainers with a bit of grip for the bhangra bounce. There is no costume requirement — come as you are, though people often enjoy adding some colour once they are hooked.
How much is a class? +
A flat £8 per session, paid on the day. No term fees, no membership and nothing else to buy to take part.
What is the difference between Bollywood and bhangra? +
Bhangra is a specific energetic folk dance from the Punjab, all shoulders and bounce. Bollywood is the film style that blends bhangra with classical Indian gestures and modern choreography. Our class draws on both, and we are clear about which is which as we teach.
Where are the classes held? +
In central Blackburn near the Cathedral Quarter and the Mall, with a second studio on the Ewood and Mill Hill side. You will get the confirmed address when you book, and both are easy to reach by bus or from the station.
Am I too old for Bollywood dancing? +
No — the class welcomes adults of every age and we pitch the pace so it is energising rather than exhausting. You set how big you take the movement.
Is the class respectful of the culture it comes from? +
That matters to us. We name the real traditions the dance draws on, teach the genuine technique, and treat it as the living culture it is — the opposite of a novelty theme. Blackburn's own South Asian communities and the Museum's South Asian Gallery are part of why we take that seriously.
How do I join? +
