Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0:00

At the Barre

We open with pliés and tendus, using the barre for light support while the ankles, knees and turnout warm up gently and safely.

0:15

Line & Alignment

Attention turns to how you stack your spine, shoulders and head — the unglamorous detail that makes every position look calm and clean.

0:30

Into the Centre

Stepping away from the barre, you hold simple shapes unsupported, so the balance the barre was teaching becomes your own.

0:45

Across the Floor

Unhurried travelling steps — a measured walk, a small chassé — let you move through the room with control rather than rushing.

0:55

Reverence

We wind down with the gentle curtsey or bow that traditionally rounds off a ballet lesson — a slow, grounding way to leave the room calm.

About Ballet Classes in Blackburn

Ballet sits underneath almost every other style of dancing — it is where the turnout, the lifted posture and the quiet control all come from. Our ballet classes in Blackburn are built for adults, whether you wore soft shoes as a child and want to find the barre again or you have simply always fancied trying it and never had the chance.

Blackburn has a longer dance pedigree than people expect. Fitchett Proll Dance School has been teaching in the town since 1930, and the Bernese School of Theatre Dance & Drama has trained young performers here for years — a real, rooted local scene. We tip our hat to that heritage and slot in alongside it with something they do not focus on: a relaxed, adult-only beginner class with no exams and no auditions. We are an independent teacher and not connected to those schools.

A session is a proper class in miniature — a slow barre to find your alignment, a little centre work to test your balance, and some soft travelling steps across the floor. It is calmer than a gym class but sneakily strong, and most people feel their posture and core waking up within a few weeks.

Why Choose Ballet in Blackburn?

Posture You Keep

Ballet quietly rebuilds how you stand and hold yourself, and a lot of adults notice the change in everyday life long before the mirror does.

Strong, Not Strained

It is low-impact but genuinely strengthening — deep core, stable ankles and honest flexibility, all built up patiently.

A Town With Dance Roots

From Fitchett Proll's 1930 beginnings onward, Blackburn has taken dance seriously, and our adult class is a gentle way into that tradition.

Flat £8 Drop-In

No termly bill, no uniform, no exam fees — just £8 whenever you can make the class.

Your Ballet Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

Meeting the Barre

The positions

You learn the five positions of the feet, the plié and the tendu, and how to rest a hand on the barre without hanging off it.

French, translated

The names are French but we explain each one as it appears, so the vocabulary arrives naturally with nothing to cram.

02

Finding Control

Standing alone

Short centre exercises ask you to balance and hold a shape using only your own strength, away from the barre's help.

Longer lines

You begin reaching through the arms and legs, so stiff early shapes soften into something that flows.

03

Moving With Grace

Travelling steps

Small glides and light jumps carry you across the floor with the airy quality ballet is loved for.

Dancing to the music

You learn to move with the piano instead of counting under your breath, so exercises feel like dancing.

04

A Confident Class

Start to finish

You can follow a full beginner class from barre through to reverence without needing to stop and catch up.

What comes next

Some students go on to graded study with the town's specialist schools; others just treasure the weekly hour of calm and strength.

Ballet in Blackburn FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Am I too old to start ballet? +

No — this class is built for grown-ups, and we regularly welcome people well into their sixties and seventies. Ballet meets you where your body is; we stay inside the range your joints are comfortable with and grow the movement gradually from there.

Do I need any previous experience? +

None whatsoever. Plenty of our dancers have never once stood at a barre, and others are picking it back up after decades. Everything is taught from the ground up, so arriving as an absolute newcomer is genuinely the norm here.

What do I wear, and are ballet shoes essential? +

For your first classes, leggings or fitted joggers and a top you can move in, with socks or bare feet, are perfect. Soft ballet shoes are worth getting once you know you enjoy it, but they are not needed to begin.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8 each time, paid on the day. No term fees, no uniform costs and no exam charges — you only ever pay for the classes you actually attend.

How is this different from Blackburn's ballet schools? +

Long-standing schools such as Fitchett Proll and the Bernese School do superb graded and vocational training, mostly for children and dedicated students. We are an independent adult class for beginners and returners, not affiliated with them — we simply point you toward the wider Blackburn scene.

Will ballet help my fitness or other dancing? +

A great deal. So much of jazz, contemporary and commercial technique traces back to the barre, and the deep stability, poise and suppleness ballet develops feed into all sorts of other activity — from Pilates to a long walk up a Lancashire hill.

Where are the classes held? +

In central Blackburn near the Cathedral Quarter and the Mall, with a second studio over on the Ewood and Mill Hill side. You will get the confirmed address on booking; both are reachable from the station and on bus routes.

Is ballet actually a good workout? +

Quietly, yes. It rarely leaves you gasping like a cardio session, yet sustaining a shape and governing each small movement recruits stabilising muscles most of us never engage — the ache the morning after tends to give it away.

How do I join? +

Send your details using the form on this page and we will come back to you with current times and the venue. Would rather talk it over first? Call 07759 656300.
