Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & Isolations
We loosen the spine and start isolating — moving the hips while the upper body stays still — which is the key skill everything else is built on.
Hips at the Heart
Hip drops, lifts and the first shimmies, taken slowly so you feel exactly where the movement comes from before speeding up.
Chest, Arms & Hands
We add the flowing arms and delicate hand shapes, plus soft chest movements, that give belly dance its graceful, storytelling quality.
Travelling & Veil
Simple travelling steps carry the movement around the room, with an optional first play with a veil for anyone who fancies it.
Put It Together
The pieces link into a short flowing combination danced to music, so you leave having genuinely belly danced, not just drilled.
About Belly Dance Classes in Blackburn
Belly dance — raqs sharqi in its Egyptian home — is one of the oldest and most joyful ways to move, built around the hips, the torso and long, expressive arms. It is danced by women of every shape, age and size, and that is a big part of why it feels so freeing. Our belly dance classes in Blackburn are warm, un-intimidating beginner sessions where the only goal is to enjoy moving your own body.
Blackburn is a genuinely diverse town, and our class reflects that — a friendly mix of people from across the community who turn up to shimmy, laugh and learn together. We teach the dance with respect for its Middle Eastern and Egyptian roots rather than as fancy dress, breaking the movements down clearly so complete beginners can follow from the very first hip drop.
You will start with isolations — learning to move your hips independently of your ribcage — then layer in shimmies, figure-eights and soft arm and hand work. It is low-impact but surprisingly good for core strength and posture, and by the end of a session you will have strung the moves into something that genuinely dances.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Blackburn?
For Every Body
There is no ideal shape for belly dance — the movement suits and celebrates all bodies, which is exactly why so many people feel at home in it.
Core & Posture
All that hip and torso work quietly strengthens the deep core and back muscles, improving posture without a single crunch.
Taught With Respect
We honour the dance's Egyptian and Middle Eastern origins and teach the real technique, not a costume-party version of it.
Flat £8 Drop-In
Just £8 a class, paid when you come. No blocks, no membership and no special kit needed to start.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Learning to Isolate
One part at a time
You discover how to move your hips without your shoulders coming along, which feels odd at first and then suddenly clicks.
Slow and clear
Every movement is broken right down, so a total beginner can copy it without feeling lost or exposed.
Finding the Shimmy
Hips talking
Drops, lifts and the first shimmies give you the recognisable belly-dance vocabulary to play with.
Layering up
You start doing two things at once — a shimmy while you travel, say — which is where it really starts to feel like dancing.
Adding Grace
Arms and hands
The flowing upper-body work and framing hands turn sharp movements into something soft and expressive.
A little veil
For those who want it, the veil adds drama and a lovely sense of flow to the shapes you already know.
Dancing a Piece
A full combination
You can flow through a short routine to music, choosing when to be soft and when to accent a beat.
Where next
Some students go on to performance or troupe work; many simply return each week for the confidence and the community.
Belly Dance in Blackburn FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need a certain body type to belly dance? +
Not in the slightest. Belly dance is famous for suiting every shape, age and size — the movement actually looks and feels wonderful on all bodies, and our class is a body-positive space by design.
I have never danced before — can I still join? +
Absolutely. This is a beginner class and most people arrive with no experience at all. We build the isolations up slowly and never expect you to know anything in advance.
What should I wear, and do I need a coin belt? +
Wear comfy clothes you can move in — leggings and a fitted top are ideal so you can see your own movement. A hip scarf or coin belt is fun because it jingles with your shimmies, but it is entirely optional and we can lend the idea until you get one.
How much is a class? +
A flat £8 each session, paid on the day. There are no term fees, no membership and nothing else to buy to take part.
Is belly dance the same as Bollywood or Indian dance? +
No — they come from different cultures. Belly dance has Egyptian and wider Middle Eastern roots, while Bollywood draws on South Asian traditions. We teach belly dance with respect for its own heritage, and we run separate Bollywood classes if that is what you are after.
Where are the classes held? +
In a central Blackburn studio close to the Cathedral Quarter and the Mall, within easy reach of the station and bus routes. We send the confirmed address once you book.
Am I too old for this? +
Not at all. Belly dance is gentle on the joints and danced by women well into later life. Our class welcomes adults of every age and works at a pace that suits you.
Are men welcome in the class? +
Our sessions are open and inclusive; belly dance is most often taken up by women, but we are happy to talk through what works for you if you would like to take part. Just ask when you enquire.
