Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Waking the Hips
A soft warm-up loosens the lower back, hips and shoulders and introduces the posture belly dance lives in: knees soft, chest lifted, weight settled low.
Isolations
You practise moving one part at a time — a hip drop, a chest slide, a shoulder shimmy — slowly, until each isolation answers to you on its own.
Putting Hips to Music
The isolations string together over an Arabic rhythm, so drops and figure-eights start to flow into short, repeatable phrases rather than single moves.
Arms, Hands and Veil
Soft arm paths, wrist circles and an optional veil are layered on top — the framing that turns the hip work into something that reads across a room.
A Short Dance
The pieces gather into a brief routine danced through to a whole track — earthy, expressive and nothing like as hard as it first appeared.
About Belly Dance Classes in Aberdeen
Belly dance is one of the oldest social dances there is, built on isolations — moving the hips, chest and shoulders independently over a rhythm rather than travelling across a floor. It is low-impact, endlessly adaptable to the body you have, and quietly good for posture and core strength, which is why beginners of every age and shape take to it.
In Aberdeen we teach it as an instructor-led class rather than pinning it to one venue: a warm, women-friendly room in the city centre near Union Street or over in Rosemount, plus a come-to-you option for groups. The exact studio is confirmed when you book, and for a hen do or a set of friends we will simply bring the class to your own space.
Getting there is easy in the Granite City — Aberdeen station sits at Union Square for the centre, First Aberdeen buses run out to Rosemount, and there is no tram to navigate. Wherever you start from, the class is one short hop rather than a trek across town.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Aberdeen?
It's All Isolations
The whole style is built on moving one part of the body at a time, a knack anyone can learn slowly; you do not need flexibility or fitness to begin, only patience.
Kind to Every Body
There is no height, shape or age the dance is built around — it flatters and works with whatever you bring, which is exactly why the room is such a mixed, easy one.
We Come to You
Beyond the studio classes, we bring belly dance to hen dos, birthdays and groups at your own venue right across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
Core Without the Gym
All that controlled hip and torso work quietly builds core strength and posture, so the class doubles as gentle conditioning you actually enjoy.
Your Belly Dance Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
One Part at a Time
First Weeks
Hip drops, basic shimmies and a chest slide, each drilled on its own and slowly until your body can find them without a mirror.
What to Wear
Leggings or comfy trousers and a fitted top so you can see the hips work; bare feet or soft shoes. A coin scarf is fun but never required.
Joining the Moves
Into Phrases
Linking isolations over a rhythm so drops and figure-eights run together into short combinations rather than sitting as separate tricks.
Feeling the Rhythm
Learning to hear the accents in Arabic music and place a hip drop or a shimmy exactly where the beat asks for it.
Framing It
Arms and Veil
Adding soft arm lines, wrist circles and an optional veil so the lower-body work is carried and finished by the upper body.
Your Own Colour
Longer combinations and a little room to improvise, so the same moves start to look like yours rather than a copied set.
A Full Routine
Dancing It Through
Whole routines danced to a track with control and expression, mixing earthy hip work with the softer, flowing framing on top.
Where Next
Deeper into a style — Egyptian, Turkish or fusion — plus props like veil and zills whenever you want to keep growing.
Belly Dance in Aberdeen FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to be flexible or fit to start belly dance? +
Not in the slightest. Belly dance is built on isolations you learn slowly, not on splits or stamina. You begin exactly where your body is, and the control and suppleness arrive gradually as a result of the class.
Where in Aberdeen do the belly dance classes run? +
We teach in a warm, welcoming studio in the city centre near Union Street or over in Rosemount, with the exact room confirmed when you book. For groups, we will also come to your own venue anywhere across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
What do I wear to a belly dance class? +
Leggings or comfortable trousers and a fitted top, so you and the teacher can see the hips working; bare feet or soft shoes are fine. A coin scarf tied at the hips is fun and makes the moves obvious, but it is never required.
How much does a belly dance class in Aberdeen cost? +
Every class is £8, paid when you arrive — no membership and nothing to sign up to. When a settled weekly time lands at your nearest studio, we will add a reduced rate for booking a few weeks together.
Is belly dance suitable for my age or body shape? +
Genuinely, for any. The style has no ideal height, age or shape behind it; it works with whatever you bring, which is why a typical class is such a mixed and easy-going room.
Do I have to perform or show my midriff? +
Neither. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in — plenty of people cover up completely — and there is no performance unless you choose to join one. The class is for you, not an audience.
What will I actually learn first? +
The isolations: hip drops, figure-eights, shimmies and a chest slide, taught one at a time. From there they link over an Arabic rhythm into short combinations, with arms and an optional veil added on top.
Is it a women-only class? +
The studio classes are run as a warm, women-friendly space, which is how most people prefer to start. For come-to-you groups, we simply tailor the session to whoever is booking.
Can you bring belly dance to a hen do or party? +
Yes — a belly dance session is a favourite for hen dos and birthdays, and we come to you across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Let us know a date, a rough headcount and a postcode, and we will send back one flat price for the group.
