Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warming the Frame
Before a single position, a calm joint-by-joint warm-up wakes the ankles, hips and upper back and introduces the idea beneath everything else: lifting tall and letting the floor carry your weight.
The Barre Basics
A steadying hand on the barre, you cycle pliés, tendus and rises — undramatic moves, repeated patiently, that quietly grow rotation, ankle strength and control.
Centre Work
Everything shifts off the barre into open floor, where balance has no backup and the small muscles that hold a line finally get properly involved.
Travelling and Jumping
Gentle steps link across the room and a first light spring leaves the ground, broken down slowly enough that nobody is left chasing the count.
Line and Stretch
Attention turns to the arms and the angle of the head that make a movement look complete, then a long closing stretch to finish the hour easy.
About Ballet Classes in Aberdeen
Ballet is the quiet engineering under most other dancing — line, balance and a contained strength that lend every other style its ease. A proper adult beginners' class takes for granted that you have never held a barre in your life: the first lesson is simply learning to stand well, and one idea is layered on each week after that.
Aberdeen has deep roots for it. Danscentre has taught from Hutcheon Street since 1987 with RAD-registered teachers, and Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts runs graded ballet for young dancers — a city with a real classical habit, in the same north-east that keeps Highland dancing alive next door. Ours is the grown-up beginners' strand, taught in the city centre and out in Rosemount.
When you would rather watch than dance, His Majesty's Theatre and the Music Hall bring touring companies and recitals through the year, both a short walk from Union Street. Getting to class is easy either way: Aberdeen station sits at Union Square, First Aberdeen buses cover Rosemount and the centre, and there is no tram to work out.

Why Choose Ballet in Aberdeen?
No Head Start Needed
The class is built for adults who have never taken a lesson. A dancing childhood is not assumed, and almost nobody at the barre beside you had one either.
Posture That Sticks
The steady barre and centre routine gradually changes the way you carry your back and neck, and that lift stays with you long after the class ends.
A City With Stages
With His Majesty's Theatre and the Music Hall hosting touring dance, there is skilled live work to learn from with your eyes, not only through a screen.
Met Where You Are
Every exercise bends to the flexibility and fitness you bring on the night; ballet grows those slowly instead of demanding them at the door.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Finding Your Feet
The First Weeks
First come the positions of the feet and how to rest a hand on the barre without gripping it, plus a gentle plié and a tendu — modest beginnings that everything later leans on.
Kit for Day One
All you need at the start is comfortable, stretchy clothing and socks; nothing to purchase. Pick up soft ballet shoes only once you are sure the habit is sticking.
Off the Barre
On Your Own
The drills repeat with no support, so balance becomes yours to find, and separate steps begin joining into brief runs of movement across the studio.
Quiet Gains
Your legs, middle and carriage strengthen week on week, until positions that felt clumsy at the outset settle into something comfortable.
Around the Room
Bigger Phrases
Steps that travel, unhurried turns and low jumps spread the work across the floor, with much less pausing to puzzle out where a foot should land.
With the Music
You start dancing to the shape of the music instead of a private count, adding arms and head so a movement finishes properly.
Pulling It Together
Real Combinations
Longer sequences and tidier technique put that smooth, unbroken look — the reason you came — genuinely within grasp.
What Comes After
Step up into a continuing class as things fall into place, or aim at a graded exam if you like a goal; the next rung is always there.
Ballet in Aberdeen FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Have I left it too late to start ballet? +
Very unlikely. Adult beginners are precisely who the class is for, and it is common for the room to run from twenties to seventies. Nobody assumes a dancing past, because most people at the barre do not have one.
Is this genuinely an adults' class, not a children's one? +
Adults only. Aberdeen already has strong graded and children's ballet at places like Danscentre and Aberdeen Academy; this is the grown-ups' beginners' room those schools rarely lay on, where everyone is meeting the barre as an adult together.
Where in Aberdeen do the ballet classes run? +
Our adult ballet uses partner studios in the city centre near Union Street and over in Rosemount, so there is a side of the city to suit most people. You get the exact address on booking, each an easy reach of a bus route or the station.
What do I wear, and do I need ballet shoes? +
For a first class, loose stretchy clothes and socks are plenty — buy nothing in advance. Soft ballet shoes are a nice addition once you know you will keep coming, but there is nothing to sort beforehand.
I'm not flexible or especially fit — is that a problem? +
Not at all. Flexibility and stamina come out of doing ballet; they are not an entry requirement. Each exercise scales to the body you arrive with, and you move at your own pace with nobody timing you.
How much does a ballet class in Aberdeen cost? +
A class is £8, paid as you arrive, and that is the lot — nothing to join, no block to commit to. When a regular weekly time settles at your nearest studio, we open a lower rate for booking several weeks together.
Will ballet really improve my posture? +
Markedly. The barre and centre work retrains how you carry your back, neck and shoulders, and the difference shows in how you stand and walk — for many beginners it is the first thing friends remark on.
Is there good ballet to watch in Aberdeen? +
Plenty. His Majesty's Theatre brings touring companies through the year and the Music Hall adds recitals and concerts, both near Union Street, so there is accomplished live work to study close up. Watching well is part of learning.
Can I carry on after the beginners' stage? +
Absolutely. Once the fundamentals hold, keen dancers step up into a continuing class and some aim at a graded exam. Whenever you feel ready to push on, the next stage is there to take.
