Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Timing First
We start with the count — the quick-quick-slow of salsa — clapped and stepped on the spot until your feet trust it. Get the timing and everything else has something to hang onto.
The Basic Step
You learn the forward-and-back basic and the side basic on your own, so your footwork is solid before another person is added to the equation.
Partnering Up
We bring in a frame and a gentle lead, rotating partners so nobody is stuck and everybody learns to give and read a signal. This is where salsa clicks from steps into conversation.
Your First Turn
In come the crossbody lead and a right turn — the moves that make salsa feel like salsa. We walk through the mechanics slowly so the turn is led, not yanked.
Social Run
We play a full track and dance the class as one big rotating floor, so you leave having actually social-danced, not just drilled — the exact skill a Lawley Latin night asks of you.
About Salsa Classes in Telford
Salsa dance classes in Telford drop you straight into the friendliest side of Latin dance: a shared count, a simple step and the quiet thrill of turning your first partner without treading on anyone. Telford already has a genuine Latin pulse — the Lawley Latin nights run by the local Telford Salsa & Bachata community are proof there is an appetite for it — and our beginner classes give you the grounding to walk into a social like that and actually join in.
You do not need a partner and you do not need any experience. We rotate the room so everyone dances with everyone, teach lead and follow as skills rather than fixed roles, and break the basic step, the crossbody lead and your first turn down until they feel natural. The music does the rest.
Classes run across Telford & Shropshire — the Southwater and Telford Central side, out toward Wellington and Oakengates — with your venue confirmed when you book. Each session is £8, paid on the night, so you can try salsa once before deciding it is your new midweek fixture. Flat shoes or low heels, comfortable clothes and a willingness to laugh at the first few spins.

Why Choose Salsa in Telford?
No partner needed
We rotate the whole room every few minutes, so you always have someone to dance with and you learn to adapt rather than memorising one person's habits.
Built for real floors
Everything we teach is aimed at an actual social night — the kind of Latin scene Telford genuinely has — not a closed-off exam routine you only ever do in class.
Timing made simple
We spend the first minutes on the count alone, because once the quick-quick-slow lands in your feet, the steps start to follow almost on their own.
Handy across Telford
Sessions sit near Southwater and Telford Central, with your exact venue confirmed on booking, so it is an easy hop before or after a meal or drinks.
Your Salsa Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Weeks 1–2 — Foundations
Owning the basic
You lock in the timing and the basic step until you can do it without counting out loud. Dull for ten minutes, then liberating forever.
Leading and following
You try both roles in a rotating room, learning that a good lead is an invitation and a good follow is listening — skills, not genders.
Weeks 3–6 — Turning
Crossbody & turns
The crossbody lead and your first turns arrive, and the dance suddenly travels and spins instead of marching on the spot.
Reading the music
You begin to hear where the phrase turns, so your moves land with the music rather than fighting against it.
Months 2–3 — Flow
Combinations
Turns, crossbodies and hand changes link into short combinations you can lead or follow smoothly.
Social-ready
You reach the point where you could walk into a Latin social, ask for a dance and hold your own — the whole reason people start.
Ongoing — Your Scene
Styling
Arm styling, body movement and a little shine work make the dance yours rather than a set of borrowed shapes.
Out dancing
Plenty of our dancers become regulars on Telford's Latin nights; at £8 a class with no term, you can keep topping up your skills as long as you like.
Salsa in Telford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need to bring a partner? +
No. We rotate partners throughout the class, so you can come completely on your own and never sit out. Couples are welcome too, but you will still swap around to learn faster.
I've never danced before — is that a problem? +
Not in the slightest. These are true beginner classes that assume zero experience, starting from the count and the basic step. Adults of every age start here.
Do you teach salsa or bachata? +
Our weekly classes focus on salsa. Telford's independent Latin nights tend to mix salsa and bachata, so the grounding you get here sets you up for both when you go social.
What shoes should I wear? +
Flat shoes or a low heel with a smooth sole that lets you pivot — trainers with grippy rubber can catch on turns. Comfortable clothes you can move in are perfect.
How much is a class? +
A flat £8 per session, paid on the night. No block booking, no contract — just turn up, dance, and come back when it suits you.
Where in Telford are classes held? +
Around the Southwater and Telford Central side, across Telford & Shropshire toward Wellington and Oakengates. Your exact venue is confirmed when you book.
Is there anywhere to practise socially in Telford? +
Yes — Telford has a real grassroots Latin scene, including the long-running Lawley Latin nights hosted by the independent Telford Salsa & Bachata community. We are not affiliated with them, but they are a friendly place to use what you learn.
Can I come with friends or a hen group? +
Absolutely. Friends are welcome in a normal class, and for a celebration you can book a private salsa hen party session built around your group instead.
What if I have two left feet? +
Then you are in exactly the right room. We break every move down to its smallest piece and repeat it, and the rotating format means you get lots of relaxed, low-stakes goes at each one.
