Warm and Stretch Long
Jazz asks a lot of the spine and hips, so we open with a full mobilising warm-up — rolls, reaches and stretches — that wakes up the exact ranges the style will use.
Isolate Every Part
Head, shoulders, ribs and hips each learn to move on their own; these clean isolations are the alphabet that every jazz phrase is spelled with.
Travel Across the Floor
Kicks, chassés and step-touches carry you through space, so the movement stops being stuck on the spot and starts covering the room with confidence.
Learn a Show Phrase
A short routine with a proper build and a sharp finish gets taught in chunks, counted through until the accents and the head-flick land together.
Perform and Ease Off
We run the phrase a couple of times with the music up, then bring the heart rate down with a calm stretch so you leave loose rather than aching.
About Jazz Classes in Telford
Jazz is the language behind almost every stage and screen routine you've ever admired — the sharp isolations, the travelling kicks, the flick of the head that finishes a phrase. Our jazz dance classes in Telford teach that vocabulary from the beginning, for adults who want the show-dance sparkle without needing a single day of prior training.
Telford already has real jazz teaching in its schools: the Telford Academy of Performing Arts on Oxford Street has trained performers here for over thirty-five years, and Carmichael Dance & Theatre Arts is a long-running family school with strong theatre roots. Our adult drop-in sits alongside that scene as a relaxed, no-exam way in — we point beginners towards the established schools with respect, and keep our own hour separate and unaffiliated.
The style itself runs from the smooth, stretched lines of lyrical jazz through the angular, precise attack of Broadway and the syncopated cool of the Fosse tradition. We move between them as a group grows, layering isolations, pirouette prep and a short, satisfying routine on top of a proper warm-up. Classes are based near Southwater and Telford Central, and we travel across the new town and Shropshire for groups.

Why Choose Jazz in Telford?
Show-Dance Sparkle, No Exams
You get the kicks, turns and finish of stage jazz in a relaxed adult hour — all the performance feel with none of the grading pressure.
Beside a Real Local Scene
The Telford Academy and Carmichael have taught jazz here for decades; we name them plainly and offer an adult drop-in alongside, not a replacement.
Isolations You Can Actually Use
Clean head, rib and hip control carries straight over into commercial, heels and musical-theatre work, so the hour pays off well beyond jazz.
In Town or Out to You
Based near Southwater, we also travel to Wellington, Oakengates and the Shropshire villages for private groups, schools and event bookings.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The Jazz Alphabet
What clicks
Isolations stop feeling robotic; your head, shoulders and ribs start moving independently and cleanly on the beat.
What we add
A proper jazz warm-up you can trust, plus the first travelling steps that get you moving across the floor.
Lines and Kicks
What clicks
Your kicks gain height and control, and your arms and eyeline finally agree with your legs instead of trailing behind them.
What we add
Pirouette preparation and the stretched lyrical lines that make simple movement look finished.
Attack and Style
What clicks
You can switch between smooth lyrical flow and the sharp Broadway attack in the same routine and mean both.
What we add
A taste of the Fosse vocabulary — the angles, the isolations, the knowing cool — and longer combinations to hold it in.
Owning the Stage
What clicks
A full routine feels like a performance rather than a memory test, and the finish reads to the back of the room.
What we add
Dynamics, showmanship and, if a group wants it, a polished piece to perform at an event or share on camera.
Jazz in Telford FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Do I need any dance background for jazz? +
None at all. We start with the warm-up and the basic isolations and build from there, so a complete beginner can follow the whole class. Everything is taught in small pieces, counted through slowly before the music speeds up.
What's the price? +
£8 a session, paid on the day. There's no term fee and no block to commit to — just come to the classes that suit you and pay as you go.
How is jazz different from street or commercial dance? +
Jazz is the stage-trained root that commercial and heels grew out of — it prizes clean lines, controlled isolations, kicks and turns, with a theatrical finish. Commercial leans more into music-video style. Learning jazz gives you technique that makes every other style read better.
Isn't jazz already taught at the Telford Academy? +
It is, and we're glad to say so. The Telford Academy of Performing Arts and Carmichael Dance & Theatre Arts have taught jazz and theatre dance here for many years. We run an independent adult drop-in alongside them; if you want graded exams or a youth pathway, those schools are the right place.
Is jazz suitable for adults, or is it a children's class? +
Our weekly session is built for adults from 17 upward, with a pace and a playlist to match. Plenty of people join in their thirties, forties and beyond — jazz rewards control and expression, not youth.
What should I wear? +
Fitted, stretchy clothes you can move in, and either jazz shoes, ballet-style slippers or clean socks with grip. Trainers are fine for a first class. Bring water and tie long hair back.
Will jazz help with other styles? +
Enormously. The isolations, turns and lines you build in jazz feed straight into heels, commercial, musical theatre and even ballroom styling. Many dancers take jazz specifically as the technique base under everything else they do.
Can you teach a group or run a workshop? +
Yes — we bring jazz workshops and short routines to hen groups, work socials, schools and community events across Telford and Shropshire. Tell us the group size and roughly when, and we'll put a quote together.
Where are the classes held? +
Our adult sessions are based near Southwater and Telford Central, with the exact studio confirmed on booking. For groups we also travel across the new town — Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley — and out into the wider Shropshire villages.
