Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Isolations & Control

Sharp isolation drills, angles and clean lines to warm up — commercial lives on precision, so we sharpen it before anything else happens.

10–25 mins

Hits & Musicality

Learning to catch the accents in a track, level changes and the hit-the-beat attack that makes choreography read from the back row.

25–40 mins

The Routine

A chart-standard number taught in small sections and layered up, set to whatever is on the radio now rather than a decade ago.

40–50 mins

Facings & Formations

Where the group faces, spacing and the geometry that turns a room of dancers into one clean shape aimed at a camera.

50–60 mins

Performance & Film

A full-out run with performance face on, filmed on the last take so you can watch your own progress back afterwards.

About Commercial Classes in Sheffield

Commercial dance is the choreography built for the camera — the routines behind music videos, tours and TV performances. There is no better city to train it than the one that wired British pop: Sheffield gave the country The Human League, Heaven 17, Cabaret Voltaire and Warp Records, and its bleep-techno pioneers put the low end into dance music.

We teach at partner studios in the Devonshire Quarter and around Kelham Island — the city's creative and industrial-hip corners — with the exact base confirmed when you book. Two big universities feed a young, hungry dance scene, so expect a mix of first-timers and dancers keeping their pick-up sharp between projects.

The class works the way the industry does: learn it fast, clean it up, then sell it. Beginners are genuinely the point — pick-up speed is a skill we teach, not one we assume. Sheffield station and the Supertram drop you a short walk from the studios, which beats hunting for a paid multi-storey.

Why Choose Commercial in Sheffield?

Industry-Standard Choreography

Routines built the way music-video and tour numbers are built, taught by dancers who work that world between classes.

Pick-Up Speed

The core skill of every commercial dancer — catching choreography fast — drilled from your first session until it becomes second nature.

Formations & Camera Craft

Spacing, facings and performance face — the group polish that separates commercial from its rougher street-dance roots.

A Young City Scene

Two universities and a real studio scene mean a full, sociable room and a natural next step whenever you want more.

Your Commercial Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Getting Sharp

Getting Started

Isolations, grooves and the feel of commercial movement — clean, sharp and precise. Rhythm and confidence come before any speed.

What to Wear

Comfortable kit you can move in and clean trainers — joggers, leggings, a tee. Save any heels for a dedicated heels class.

Month 2–3

Learning to Perform

Foundations

Hits, angles and level changes strung into full eight-counts, with musicality doing the driving rather than counting alone.

Finding Your Flavour

Commercial borrows from jazz, hip-hop and street — you start to feel whether hard-hitting power or smooth control is more your thing.

Month 4–6

Full Pieces

Longer Routines

Faster pick-up, trickier transitions and complete numbers you could film for socials or take to a stage.

The Polish

The work shifts from getting the steps right to making them look right — texture, energy and a proper front to play to.

Month 6+

Camera-Ready

Performance

Optional film shoots and showcase nights put everything in front of a lens or an audience — or just keep dancing for the buzz.

What's Next

Improver choreography, audition-style pick-up work, or branching into heels as commercial's sister style.

Commercial in Sheffield FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Sheffield are the commercial dance classes held? +

At partner studios in the Devonshire Quarter and around Kelham Island, the creative quarters either side of the city centre. The exact base is confirmed when you book, a short walk or Supertram hop from Sheffield station.

How much is a commercial dance class in Sheffield? +

£8 for a drop-in, paid on the night, with no contract or joining fee. Once your nearest studio has a fixed weekly slot we will add discounted block bookings.

Do I need dance experience to start? +

No. Beginner commercial assumes nothing — pick-up speed is taught from the ground up. Most people in a starter session have never learned a routine before, and the format is built so nobody gets left behind.

What should I wear to commercial class? +

Clothes you can move freely in and clean-soled trainers — leggings or joggers and a tee are ideal. Nothing restrictive, and no special shoes; heels belong in the separate heels class.

What is the difference between commercial and street dance? +

Street dance goes deep on culture, foundations and freestyle. Commercial takes those ingredients and points them at a camera — sharper lines, formations and performance polish. Plenty of Sheffield dancers train both.

What music do the routines use? +

Current chart pop, R&B and Afrobeats — and, fittingly for the birthplace of synth-pop and Warp Records, plenty of electronic-flavoured tracks. Your teacher keeps the playlist fresh from week to week.

Will I be filmed in class? +

Usually on the final run, yes — a quick clip so you can watch your own progress back. It is never compulsory, and nothing is posted anywhere without the room's say-so.

Is commercial dance a good workout? +

Very — it is high-energy cardio with sharp, repeated routines that build stamina and coordination without feeling like a gym session. Most people leave warm, buzzing and slightly out of breath.

Can a group book a private commercial class in Sheffield? +

Yes — a private music-video routine makes a great hen or group session. Tell us your numbers and date on the form and we will sort a Sheffield studio or come to your venue.
