Ankles & Warm-Up
Loosening the ankles and calves and waking up the feet — tap lives below the knee, so the warm-up gets exactly those joints ready to make noise.
The Core Sounds
Shuffles, taps, flaps and ball-changes drilled slowly — the individual sounds that every step is built from, learned clean before they are ever asked to go fast.
Time Steps
The classic time step and its variations, the phrase every tapper knows; putting the basic sounds into rhythm and repeating until the feet simply remember.
Rhythm & Routine
Stitching steps into a short routine to music, working on staying in time and letting the sounds swing and groove rather than march stiffly along.
Trade Fours & Cool Down
A relaxed go at trading simple rhythms round the room, then a stretch for the calves and ankles that have done all the work.
About Tap Classes in Sheffield
Tap is the one dance where you make the music you move to — percussion played with your feet, built from crisp little sounds like shuffles, flaps and time steps. Our tap dance classes in Sheffield start you from the very first sound and build steadily toward full rhythms and routines, so absolute beginners feel the groove within their first few weeks.
There is something fitting about learning to hammer out rhythm in the Steel City, and tap is also the sound of the touring musicals that fill Sheffield's Lyceum and Crucible. Our sessions run from partner studios in and around the city centre and Kelham Island, a short walk or Supertram stop from Sheffield station, chosen for hard, sprung floors that let every sound ring clearly.
You need no experience to begin, and you need not buy tap shoes to try it — we lend pairs for your first sessions. Wear clothes you can move in and bring a bit of patience for your ankles.

Why Choose Tap in Sheffield?
You Are the Instrument
Tap is the rare dance where you make the music you move to. In a city built on hammering metal, becoming your own percussion section feels oddly and pleasingly right.
Shoes to Borrow
No need to buy tap shoes just to try it. We keep loan pairs for your first sessions, so you can find out whether you love it before spending a single penny.
A Workout for the Brain
Coordinating rhythm, feet and memory keeps the mind every bit as busy as the body; tappers swear by it for focus, and there is good reason they do.
Straight From the Stage
Tap is the sound of the musicals that tour the Lyceum. Learn it and those big screen and stage numbers stop being magic and start being technique you recognise.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
First Sounds
Getting Started
Shuffles, taps and flaps at a gentle pace, learning to make each sound land cleanly and clearly. The goal is clarity and a grin, not speed.
What to Wear
Comfy clothes and, if you own them, tap shoes — otherwise borrow a pair from us. A hard-soled shoe will do for a first look; trainers simply will not.
Keeping Time
Building Steps
The time step, shuffle ball-changes and simple combinations, set into steady rhythm. The feet start doing things without you having to stare at them.
Finding the Swing
Learning to relax the ankles so the sounds swing and groove instead of landing stiff and even. This is where tap really starts to sound like tap.
Rhythms & Routines
Longer Phrases
Pull-backs, riffs and paddle-and-rolls woven into fuller routines set to music, building your speed and your stamina together.
Musicality
Playing with dynamics and accents, hearing where your feet sit against the band and beginning to phrase like a musician rather than a metronome.
Tapping Free
Improvising
Trading rhythms, improvising short breaks and holding your own in a group number with genuine, easy confidence.
What's Next
Faster rhythm tap and hoofing, performance and showcase opportunities, or a run at jazz to broaden your stage vocabulary.
Tap in Sheffield FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Sheffield are the tap classes held? +
At partner studios in and around the city centre and Kelham Island, all within easy reach of Sheffield station and the Supertram. The exact room is confirmed when you book — and picked for a hard, sprung floor that lets the sounds ring out.
How much do tap classes cost in Sheffield? +
It is £8 for a drop-in, with cheaper blocks once your class timetable is confirmed. No membership and no contract — just turn up and tap when it suits you.
Do I need any dance experience to start tap? +
None whatsoever. We begin with single sounds and build from there, and most people in a beginners' class have never tapped before. Rhythm is trained in the room, not assumed at the door.
What should I wear, and do I need tap shoes? +
Wear clothes you can move in. You do not need to buy tap shoes to begin — we lend pairs for your first sessions; a hard-soled shoe works in a pinch, but trainers muffle everything.
Can I borrow tap shoes before buying my own? +
Yes — that is exactly why we keep loan pairs. Try a few classes, decide you are hooked, then invest in your own; there is little point buying shoes for a style you have not tested yet.
Is tap hard on the knees or joints? +
Done properly, no. Good tap is light and springs from the ankle rather than pounding through the knee, and we teach that soft technique from day one. The sprung studio floors help a great deal too.
What is a time step? +
It is the classic phrase every tapper learns — a set rhythmic pattern that turns up across countless routines. Master it and you share a language with tap dancers everywhere; we introduce it within your first few weeks.
Is tap good exercise? +
Surprisingly, yes — it is low-impact cardio that fires up the calves and gets the heart going, all while your brain is busy tracking rhythm. You will feel it in your legs the next day.
Where can tap take me in Sheffield? +
Tap is the heartbeat of the touring musicals at the Lyceum and the Crucible, and our classes can lead into showcases and performance groups. Plenty of adults simply love that they can finally make those Hollywood sounds themselves.
