Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–8 min

Loosen and settle

A soft warm-up frees the hips, waist and shoulders, and we find the relaxed, grounded stance that every move in the class grows out of.

8–20 min

Hip isolations

You learn to move one part at a time — hip drops, lifts and slides — training your body to speak in small, deliberate pieces rather than all at once.

20–35 min

The shimmy

The signature shimmy comes in slowly from relaxed, loose knees, built up gently so it stays soft rather than turning into a tense, held shake.

35–48 min

Arms and figure-eights

Flowing snake arms and horizontal and vertical figure-eights add the fluid upper body that gives the dance its hypnotic, unhurried quality.

48–60 min

Put it together

We thread the moves into a short flowing dance over an Arabic rhythm, so you finish having danced something whole instead of drilling in fragments.

About Belly Dance Classes in Newport

Belly dance — raqs sharqi in its Egyptian home — is an ancient solo dance built on the subtle control of one body part at a time: a hip that drops on its own, a wave that travels up through the arms, a shimmy that hums along underneath. Our Newport beginner class breaks it down move by move, so what can look impossibly fluid from the outside turns out to be a stack of small, learnable pieces.

It is a dance that sits well in Newport. The city's Pill and Maindee neighbourhoods give it a genuinely diverse, multicultural pulse, and belly dance has long been a joyful shared thread across exactly those kinds of communities. This is a solo dance — there is no partner and no lead to follow — and our floor is a warm, no-judgement one where every age, shape and size is not merely tolerated but actively welcome.

We teach from a central room near Commercial Street and Friars Walk, with a riverside space on the Maindee side of the Usk, so whether you are coming in from Pill, Bettws, Malpas, Rogerstone or out toward Caerleon, one of the two is a short trip. Your exact venue is confirmed when you book.

Why Choose Belly Dance in Newport?

Every body welcome

Belly dance was never built for one body type, and our class means it — every age, shape and size finds the movement works with them, not against them.

Real control

Learning to isolate one muscle group at a time is a genuine skill that carries into posture, coordination and how aware you are of your own body.

Low impact, strong core

There is no jumping and no jarring, yet the constant gentle work through the middle quietly builds real core strength over the weeks.

One flat £8

A single price on the door, no membership and no block to buy ahead — come for a week and decide whether it is for you.

Your Belly Dance Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

01

First few weeks

Finding the hips

You locate the hip drop and lift, and the moves that felt mysterious from the outside start to make simple, physical sense.

One thing at a time

Isolating a single part while the rest stays still is the core skill, and it grows more natural every session.

02

The shimmy

Relaxed knees

You discover the shimmy comes from loose, easy legs rather than force, and it stops being exhausting the moment you let it soften.

Layering it up

The shimmy begins to sit underneath other moves, humming away while your hips or arms do something else entirely.

03

A fluid upper body

Snake arms

The wave that travels out through the shoulders and arms softens, and your upper body starts to flow rather than hold.

Figure-eights

Horizontal and vertical eights give the hips a smooth, continuous quality that ties the whole dance together.

04

Dancing it

Hearing the rhythm

You begin to recognise the underlying Arabic rhythms and let the drum tell your hips when to drop and when to travel.

A short routine

The separate moves link into a flowing little dance, which is when belly dance stops being exercises and becomes expression.

Belly Dance in Newport FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need a partner? +

No. Belly dance is a solo dance, so you never need to bring anyone. You learn and perform every move entirely on your own, at your own pace, within a friendly group.

Do I need any experience? +

None whatsoever. The beginner class starts from the very first hip drop and builds slowly, so people who have never danced a step feel at home from the first week.

Do I need a particular body type? +

Absolutely not, and this matters to us. Belly dance genuinely suits every shape, size and age — it was never designed around one kind of body, and our class is a warm, no-judgement space that reflects that.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable clothing you can move freely in — leggings and a fitted top let you see your hips work, which helps. A coin hip scarf is fun and makes the movement audible, but it is entirely optional and never required.

Is the class only for women? +

In practice most people who come along are women, and the room is very much a welcoming, supportive one. That said, we do not turn anyone away — the class is open to any adult who wants to learn.

Whereabouts in Newport are the classes held? +

We use a central room near Commercial Street and Friars Walk, plus a riverside space on the Maindee side of the Usk. Which one you are in is confirmed when you book.

How do I get there and where do I park? +

Newport (South Wales) station is a short walk from the centre, and Friars Walk has its own parking for an evening class. The city has no tram or metro. If there is a fixture at Rodney Parade, set off a little earlier to dodge the matchday traffic.

How much is a class? +

A flat £8, paid on the night. No membership, no joining fee and no block booking — you pay only for the sessions you come to.

How do I book my first class? +

Fill in the form on this page with your name and a contact number, and we will reply within a working day with the next beginner date, the venue and directions.
