Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

The Engine Room

Pulses lifted, then straight into isolations — the head on its own, the ribcage on its own, hips and shoulders pulling in different directions. It looks like nothing much and it underwrites everything the rest of the hour attempts.

10–25 mins

Across the Floor

Short repeatable drills sent corner to corner: chaînés, jazz squares, battements and the first honest run at a clean pirouette. You will miss the gains on the night and clock them weeks apart.

25–40 mins

Cover Ground

Now the room opens out. Leaps, chassés and sweeping diagonals ask you to reach into the space and land each shape, which is the exact quality that pushes jazz to the cheap seats.

40–50 mins

Learn the Combo

A short number lifted from the shows, drip-fed a phrase at a time and then dressed up with dynamics, attack and the unashamed face the style flatly insists on.

50–60 mins

Perform and Ease Off

Two full-out goes — the second reliably outshines the first — then a slow, thorough stretch to send you home loose rather than seizing.

About Jazz Classes in Leeds

No city in the North keeps company like Leeds does where dance is concerned. Northern Ballet trains and tours out of here, Phoenix Dance Theatre was born here, and the Northern School of Contemporary Dance is the only conservatoire of its type beyond London. Jazz threads through that whole ecosystem, and our jazz dance classes in Leeds teach it straight: isolations, turns, kicks and travelling lines, with the performing itself treated as part of the technique rather than a flourish on top.

Pound for pound it may be the shrewdest thing on the sheet, because so much else leans on it — sort your pirouettes here and they resurface in tap, in commercial, in any staged number you meet. Sessions run at partner studios across the centre and the Quarry Hill side of town, the address landing with your confirmation, each an easy stroll from the station. The Leeds Grand sits near enough to build a whole evening around: rehearse the steps by daylight, watch the touring pros perform them after dark.

Splits, jazz shoes and a dance CV are none of them conditions of entry — trainers and a bit of front will see the first month out fine. The adult floor puts 17-year-olds beside 70-somethings, younger dancers work in age-graded groups with teachers cleared by the DBS, and a drop-in is £8, roughly the price of an interval drink at the Grand.

Why Choose Jazz in Leeds?

Grown in a Dance City

The vocabulary you rehearse in the studio is the very one Northern Ballet, Opera North and the touring shows at the Grand put on stage — you are picking up the local trade, not a hobby shipped in from elsewhere.

The Base Under Everything

Give jazz a term and the rest of your dancing quietly sharpens up — balances hold, arms lengthen, counts land where they belong. That knock-on is why regulars call it the course to take first.

It Builds You As You Go

Arrive inflexible and out of shape by all means; the leaps, floor sequences and kick work are set up to hand you the strength and the stretch over the weeks, no separate gym subscription needed.

Watched From the Start

Because each combo is drilled as a mini-performance from the first week, the self-consciousness burns away early — well before the choreography turns genuinely demanding.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Clean Shapes

First Month

Isolations, a jazz square or two and a short combo to hang them on. Nobody minds how high or fast yet; they mind that the shape is neat and you can produce it twice on the trot.

What You Need

Something fitted you can fold and kick in, and either trainers or bare feet. Jazz shoes belong to a later chapter, and we will nudge you the week that chapter actually opens.

Month 2–3

The Turns Land

Rotation

The groundwork cashes out. Single pirouettes begin holding, the leg lifts higher, and the corner-to-corner work flips from the dreaded stretch of the hour into the highlight.

Timing

Toying with holds, accents and the snap of a step meeting the downbeat dead on — this is jazz being witty with the music rather than merely obeying it.

Month 4–6

Colour and Weight

Dynamics

Whisper-soft set beside razor-sharp, vast beside minuscule. The longer numbers force a decision, and deciding is the point where technique tips over into taste.

The Body Follows

All that quiet strength-building shows its face — cushioned landings, balances that hold longer, a battement that has climbed a few degrees since you started.

Month 6+

Full Numbers

The Whole Piece

Complete routines carried with intent and character behind them — dancing shaped to project cleanly to whoever is parked in the very back row.

After That

Pile tap, commercial or contemporary on the jazz base, chase an audition standard if the bug bites, or just quietly walk off with the show at the next family wedding.

Jazz in Leeds FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Which corner of Leeds holds the jazz classes? +

Partner studios across the city centre and around Quarry Hill, with the precise spot named in your booking email. Every one is a few minutes on foot from Leeds station; drivers will find paid multi-storeys by Trinity and the Merrion Centre.

What will a jazz class in Leeds set me back? +

Eight pounds a session, handed over on the night. Nothing to enrol in and no sign-up charge; once a fixed weekly time settles at your studio, discounted blocks come in behind it.

I have never set foot in a dance class — is jazz wise? +

It is one of the smartest first moves going. Jazz drills the underlying technique the flashier styles assume you already own, and the beginner group launches from a dead stop — keep a beat standing still and you are in.

What goes on, and must I own jazz shoes? +

Snug, stretchy layers and clean trainers, or nothing on the feet at all to start. Jazz shoes only matter some months down the road, and we will flag it out loud before you part with any cash.

Must I already be bendy? +

Not a bit. Keenness trumps a split here; the suppleness gets grown through the warm-up and the wind-down, and every kick tops out wherever your own leg happens to reach that evening.

Is this show jazz or the commercial kind? +

The core is stage technique, but across a term the routines wander through lyrical, vintage and commercial jazz. Wide on purpose, since Leeds is a theatre town and the Grand's programme borrows from all of it.

Where does jazz part company with contemporary? +

Jazz throws its energy up and out, bright and clean toward the crowd; contemporary pours it down into the floor, all weight and momentum. They complement each other, and with Phoenix Dance Theatre on the doorstep Leeds teaches the pair with equal care.

Have I left it too late to start? +

The adult class spans 17 to 75 and means every year of it. Jazz reshapes itself around whoever shows up — every leap and kick has a kinder setting that still looks and counts as jazz.

Might jazz actually take me somewhere? +

Only as far as you decide to chase it. It is the tongue most theatre auditions are conducted in, so showcases and proper training are on the table, and the committed hear of chances first. The bulk of the room, though, just turns up for the buzz.
