Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0:00

Warm-Up & Isolations

We wake the body up and drill isolations — moving the ribs, then the hips, then the shoulders alone. It is the alphabet of jazz.

0:12

Across The Floor

Jazz walks, chassés and pas de bourrée travelling corner to corner, building the clean lines and travel every routine needs.

0:26

Turns & Kicks

A safe introduction to the pirouette and the kick — spotting to stay dizzy-free and controlling the leg rather than throwing it.

0:40

Routine Of The Week

We teach a short theatre-jazz combination to a musical-theatre or pop track, sharp and full of attack, one eight-count at a time.

0:53

Perform & Stretch

We run the routine as a group with real showtime energy, then cool down with the deep stretches that keep jazz muscles long.

About Jazz Classes in Ipswich

Jazz is the connective tissue of the dance world — the technique sitting under musical theatre, commercial routines and half of what tours through the Regent Theatre on Ipswich's own stage every season. Our jazz classes in Ipswich give you that grounding: the isolations, the turns, the leaps and the unmistakable performance attack that lets you step into almost any choreography with a head start. It is showy, disciplined and a lot more fun than its precision suggests.

Ipswich is a genuinely strong town to learn it in. The Ipswich School of Dancing has taught technique here for more than seventy-five years, DanceEast brings world-class contemporary and jazz-adjacent work to the Jerwood DanceHouse on the Waterfront, and the Regent gives you a real touring stage to aspire toward. We reference that scene rather than partner with it — but it means the movement vocabulary you build with us is the same one working dancers across Suffolk speak.

You will not be thrown into the splits on day one. Beginners start with posture, jazz walks and isolating one body part at a time — ribs, shoulders, hips — before we layer in pirouettes, kicks and the sharp, syncopated combinations jazz is loved for. Every drop-in is £8, paid per session with nothing to sign, so you can trade one evening a week for the confidence to actually enjoy being watched.

Why Choose Jazz in Ipswich?

The Gateway Technique

Jazz underpins musical theatre and commercial dance, so what you learn here transfers straight into almost every other style.

Stage-Ready Presence

We teach performance, not just steps — the projection and sharpness that read from the back row of a theatre like the Regent.

Strength & Flexibility

Isolations, kicks and turns build core control and a longer, more flexible line without a single boring stretch drill in isolation.

£8, No Strings

Pay per session with nothing signed. Come weekly, come monthly, or just try one class and see how it lands.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

1

First Session

Move One Part At A Time

Isolations feel strange and then addictive — by the end of class one you can pop your ribs and roll your shoulders on cue.

Find The Attack

Jazz is about intention. We coach you to finish a move sharply rather than let it fade, and it transforms how you look instantly.

2

Weeks 2–4

Travel And Turn

Across-the-floor work gives you jazz walks that cover ground, and your first controlled single pirouette with a clean spot.

Musicality

You start hitting accents in the music rather than dancing over the top of it — the difference between steps and performance.

3

Weeks 5–8

Bigger Combinations

Routines grow to full 32-count sequences with kicks, turns and level changes that genuinely look like a stage number.

Clean Lines

We refine the details — pointed feet, lifted chest, sharp arms — so the whole thing reads polished rather than approximate.

4

Ongoing

Perform With Confidence

You can pick up choreography quickly and hold your own in a group number without needing every count called.

Branch Out

Jazz opens doors — dancers use it as the launchpad into musical theatre, commercial and heels work across the Ipswich scene.

Jazz in Ipswich FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need dance experience to start jazz? +

No. The beginners class starts from posture, jazz walks and isolating one body part at a time, so a complete first-timer is exactly who it is built for.

How flexible do I need to be? +

Not very, to begin with. Flexibility is something jazz builds in you over time — we never ask for kicks or splits your body is not ready for, and we warm up thoroughly first.

What is the difference between jazz and street or commercial? +

Jazz is the technical foundation — lines, turns, kicks and theatre attack — that commercial and musical-theatre choreography are built on top of. Learn jazz and the others come far more easily.

What should I wear? +

Fitted, stretchy clothing you can move and be seen in, plus jazz shoes, ballet-style pumps or clean socks on a sprung floor. Avoid baggy layers that hide your lines.

How much is a class? +

Every drop-in is £8, paid per session. No memberships, no blocks and no contracts — you only pay for the classes you actually attend.

Where are the classes held? +

At a confirmed Ipswich studio, either town centre near the Cornhill or on the Waterfront side. Your exact location, with parking and directions, is sent when you book.

How do I get there? +

Ipswich has no tram or metro, so it is buses, driving to a named car park, or a short walk from Ipswich railway station. We include travel and parking notes with your booking confirmation.

Are you affiliated with DanceEast or the Regent Theatre? +

No. We mention them because they make Ipswich a great town to learn jazz in, but we hold no partnership with DanceEast, the Regent or the Ipswich School of Dancing.

Can I book jazz for a group or celebration? +

Yes — a theatre-jazz session is a great one-off for a birthday, work social or hen group. We run those anywhere across Ipswich and Suffolk; just tell us your numbers.
