Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Head-to-Toe Warm-Up

We start with a full jazz warm-up — neck, rib and hip isolations, then the pull-up and alignment that keep every later move looking crisp rather than loose.

10–25 mins

Technique on the Move

Travelling work and turns — chassés, pivots, kicks and an early go at spotting — the movable base that slots straight into tap, commercial or any routine built for a stage.

25–40 mins

Assemble the Combination

Now we stack the steps into a jazz number with attitude and clean lines, rehearsing each shape by itself and slow before it ever meets the music.

40–50 mins

Polish the Detail

We go back to the tricky bits — the height on a kick, the split second a turn resolves — since it is those small things that lift a move from fine to genuinely watchable.

50–60 mins

Full Out, Then Ease Down

A single full-tempo run of the number to finish, then a long stretch that keeps opening up the flexibility jazz pays back a little more each week.

About Jazz Classes in Belfast

Jazz is the engine behind show dancing — the high kicks, whipped turns, leaps and crisp isolations under touring musicals, chart routines and no end of screen work. Our jazz dance classes in Belfast keep it practical and grounded, taught a short walk from the Grand Opera House, the city's grand Victorian receiving house where the big West End tours land.

Pick it up and you are learning the most transferable thing on the timetable. The spotting, placement and core control jazz drills into you turn up again in tap, in commercial, in anything danced to an audience. Our floors sit in the city centre near the Linen Quarter and over in the Cathedral Quarter by the MAC — you will hear which when you book.

You will not be asked to touch your toes on day one, and there is no rule about owning jazz shoes or arriving with a dance background — trainers and a bit of willing cover the early weeks, and shoes can hold off until you are sure. Teenagers dance beside people well into their seventies on the adult floor, under-18s train in their own graded groups, and a class is £8 — cheaper than a ticket in the circle up the road.

Why Choose Jazz in Belfast?

The Root of Everything Else

Nail the spotting, kicks and core control in jazz and you will feel them again everywhere — tap, commercial, musical theatre — because this is the technique all of them quietly stand on.

A Great Stage on the Doorstep

Belfast's Grand Opera House brings the major West End tours and musicals to town, and jazz is exactly what sits under those routines — picked up minutes from where they play.

Start in Your Trainers

You need neither jazz shoes nor any prior training to walk in — come in trainers, gather the detail bit by bit, and put off buying shoes until you are sure this is for you.

Solid Grounding for Juniors

Under-18s work in separate graded classes with background-checked teachers — an ideal early base for anyone who might chase stage or commercial dancing later.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Alignment First

Foundations

Everything opens with isolations and posture, plus a starter batch of kicks and pivots. Getting the placement right matters far more early on than moving quickly or looking impressive.

What to Wear

Something fitted you can stretch in — leggings or joggers and a close top — with trainers on your feet. Save the jazz shoes for when you know you have caught the bug.

Weeks 5–12

Turning and Linking

Learning to Spot

You drill spotting and take on your first proper turns, then thread them through short routines so the technique finally behaves like real choreography.

Bigger Shapes

The kicks reach further, the joins between moves iron out, and a bit of that jazz swagger starts creeping into how you carry each shape.

Terms Two and Three

Turning It Into Performance

Longer Pieces

Meatier routines with light and shade and genuine expression, run at full tilt — the stage where clean technique quietly becomes something an audience would watch.

The Crossover

You feel the jazz base surfacing in your tap and commercial work too, doing exactly the job we said it would.

Onwards

Ready to Perform

Polished Up

Turns that hold, lines that read from the back row, and the endurance to carry a full number from opening count to the last held pose.

Where Next

Our showcases and events, or feeding the technique into the theatre and screen work that keeps Belfast's performers busy.

Jazz in Belfast FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

How is jazz different from contemporary? +

Think of jazz as the punchy, upbeat one — sprung from stage and social dance, all sharp turns, kicks and attitude. Contemporary is smoother and spends more time near the ground. If you want bright and outward-facing, jazz is your answer.

I've never danced and I don't own jazz shoes — is that a problem? +

None whatsoever. Most people in the beginner class have never danced, and your normal trainers are fine for the early weeks. Only think about jazz shoes once you are sure you are staying — and we will nudge you when the time comes.

Where in Belfast do the jazz classes run? +

At partner studios in the city centre near the Linen Quarter and over in the Cathedral Quarter, with the exact room confirmed after you book. Grand Central and Lanyon Place are both an easy walk or Glider ride away.

I'm not remotely flexible — am I ruled out? +

Absolutely not. Your range widens gradually across the term instead of being required up front, and we bookend every class with a decent stretch, so any flexibility you need builds up naturally.

Is this stage jazz or the commercial sort? +

Chiefly theatre and show jazz — the sharp lines, kicks and turns you would see in a big stage number — with a bit of commercial flavour mixed in. The technique beneath works for either path you choose.

What does a jazz class cost here? +

£8 at the door, per session, with no membership to sign. Once your nearest studio locks in a weekly slot, discounted multi-week blocks appear next to the pay-as-you-go option.

Does jazz open other doors? +

Plenty of them. It underpins musical theatre, commercial routines and a stack of screen work, and Belfast's touring stages and busy film scene give keen improvers somewhere genuine to point all that technique.

Is there an upper age limit? +

There isn't one really. Ages on the grown-up floor span from teens to people well past seventy, and the class adapts to whatever your body offers that evening — we hold the pace steady and warm everyone up properly beforehand.

Can my child take jazz in Belfast? +

Absolutely — under-18s learn in separate graded groups with background-checked staff. Jazz sets down timing and coordination young, and it is a great base for any child who might head towards the stage later.
