Warm-Up and Isolations
After a full warm-up we work isolations: the head, then the shoulders, ribs and hips moving one at a time while everything else holds still. That independence is the foundation the whole style is built on.
Technique, Standing Still
Next comes the technical core — pliés, controlled kicks, spotting and the mechanics of a balanced turn — all drilled without travelling, so the positions are solid before they're ever given ground to cover.
Across the Floor
Now the work travels — leaps, chaîné turns and longer combinations sent corner to corner — so the precise, planted technique becomes real movement that covers the whole studio and wakes your coordination up.
Set the Combination
Everything from the hour folds into a short combination that actually breathes: crisp on the beats, softer in the gaps, and finished enough that running it feels like performing rather than rehearsing.
Perform and Cool Down
One full-speed run gives you a taste of dancing it for real, then we cool down with a proper stretch for the legs and back that carried the session.
About Jazz Classes in Sunderland
Watch any showstopper and you're mostly watching jazz: an isolated shoulder while the body freezes, a kick to the eyeline, a turn that stops dead on the beat. Learn it and you gain attack, control and the trick of throwing a clean line all the way to the back of the auditorium. Musical theatre, commercial and heels all grow out of it.
Sunderland hands that precision a real target. The Sunderland Empire, open since 1907 and the North East's largest theatre, brings West End tours and pantomime through its doors right across the year — exactly the sort of stage sharpened choreography is aimed at. Work a Tuesday-night combination up near Keel Square and the Empire and there are genuine footlights within walking distance.
You do not need to be bendy to walk in. This class builds range slowly, session by session, through its warm-ups and stretches — it's an outcome, not an entry test. Everyday kit and trainers are fine for a long while, and jazz shoes can wait until you've earned the want. Adults start from around seventeen, younger dancers have supervised groups of their own, and every class is a flat £8.

Why Choose Jazz in Sunderland?
A Stage Worth Aiming At
Tours and pantomime pass through the Empire the whole year round, so the precision you drill has a genuine target — real footlights down the road, not just the studio glass handing back your own face.
Projected, Not Shrunk
Jazz is choreographed to reach the cheap seats, which means you learn to push energy outward and commit fully to a beat, instead of dialling everything down for a mirror.
Zero Background Is the Norm
No flexibility and no training history puts you at no disadvantage here. Range and technique climb together from wherever your body happens to be on your first evening.
A Base for Everything Else
Musical theatre, commercial and heels all sit on jazz, so time spent here shortens the road into whichever of those you decide to try next.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Control First
The Fundamentals
Posture, isolations and straightforward kicks and turns. The flashy material stays parked while accuracy and control get sorted.
What to Wear
Close-fitting, stretchy layers so your lines are visible, with trainers or grip socks. Jazz shoes are a much-later upgrade.
Adding Distance
Travelling Steps
Chaîné turns, pas de bourrée and leaps that cross the studio, building both stamina and your sense of the space.
Finding the Music
Matching the sharpness and release of each move to the track, so the routine looks danced rather than merely executed.
Full Numbers
Longer Pieces
Several weeks of technique fold into extended routines with dynamics, direction changes and plenty of attitude.
Playing Outward
Chin up, eyes out, energy sent past the mirror toward a crowd that's imaginary now and possibly real later.
Show-Ready
Reliable Turns
Turns you can trust, lines held with control, and a quick eye for picking choreography up.
What's Next
Onward into musical-theatre or commercial classes, a part in a local production, or auditions if that's your aim.
Jazz in Sunderland FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where in Sunderland do the jazz classes happen? +
At a partner studio near Keel Square and High Street West, a short stroll from the Sunderland Empire and from Sunderland station, where Metro and mainline meet. We favour a room that's easy for buses and parking, and the exact address lands with you as soon as you book.
How much does a jazz class in Sunderland cost? +
A flat £8 each visit, on the day. Nothing to join and no block to buy ahead — you pay for the classes you make and owe nothing for the ones you skip.
Can a total adult beginner really take jazz on? +
Yes — the beginners' level exists for precisely that dancer. Every combination is unpicked slowly from scratch, and the people beside you are also adults starting cold, not ex-child-performers quietly outclassing the room.
Do I have to be flexible before I start? +
Not at all — and the logic runs the other way. Flexibility is a thing jazz gives you, not a gate you pass to get in. We warm and stretch weekly, so your range grows over time and never needs to exist on night one.
What can I actually work toward in Sunderland? +
Something real. The Empire cycles West End tours and panto through all year, so the routine you sharpen has actual boards to point at rather than an endless mirror. That's the sort of stage jazz was built to fill.
What do I wear, and do I need jazz shoes? +
Fitted, stretchy things so your shape reads, plus trainers or grip socks to begin. Jazz shoes clean a turn up down the line but aren't needed early — pick some up once jazz has properly hooked you.
What sets jazz apart from contemporary or commercial? +
Against contemporary, jazz is sharper and more theatrical than that flowing floorwork. Against commercial, it's more technically grounded than the music-video style. The three swap ideas endlessly, but jazz is the most cut-glass of them.
Is jazz a solid foundation for musical theatre? +
One of the best there is. The isolations, turns, kicks and outward projection that stage numbers lean on are pure jazz, which is why so many performers drill it before touching anything else.
Do I need ballet or any previous training? +
No. Ballet helps generally, but jazz has its own technique and we teach it from the ground up. Many of our adult beginners have never been in a studio before — which is exactly who the beginner class is for.
