Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Get the Track in Your Body

We warm up to the exact song we are learning and pace its tempo out on our feet, so by the time the awkward counts arrive the rhythm is already living somewhere in your legs.

10–25 mins

Chunk by Chunk

The choreography gets carved into short chunks, each shown from the front, then the side, then from behind, all at half pace — and we lock one chunk down before the next is ever handed over.

25–40 mins

Own Your Spot

A slice of the hour goes purely on positions and which way you face, because the reason a group looks surgical on screen is not the arm-work — it is the shapes they build and dismantle together across the floor.

40–50 mins

Everyone on the Same Frame

The chunks join up and wind to full speed, with the whole line snapping its accents, freezes and turns onto the exact same frame of the song.

50–60 mins

An Optional Take, Then Stretch

If the group is up for it, we film a run the way idols refine a cover, then stretch the hour out properly.

About K-Pop Classes in Portsmouth

K-pop dance is pop filed down to a fine point: every move landing bang on the beat, formations that lock tight then spring apart, a whole line breathing as a single reflection. That exactness is what makes it worth learning properly instead of squinting at a music video. Portsmouth's class takes genuine idol routines apart and rebuilds them a piece at a time.

There is a K-pop community in Portsmouth already: the University of Portsmouth has its own student-run K-Pop Society. That society, though, is tied to being a member and enrolled, and it runs on the university calendar. What we offer is separate and public — our own teacher, our own room, and a door anyone can walk through whatever their age, with no society card and no term dates to work around.

No dance background is needed — we take it as read that you have none — and Korean stays out of it, since every count comes in ordinary numbers. Getting the slow version under your belt first is what turns the full-speed run from panic into payoff. A booked class runs to £8, paid as you go; under-18s train in supervised age groups, and if you would sooner we came to your group, we will.

Why Choose K-Pop in Portsmouth?

A Public Class, Any Age

This is not the students-only society — it is an open class with our own teacher and our own studio, so anyone can join whatever age they are, with nothing to enrol in and no card to flash.

Where You Stand Counts

We rehearse where you are placed and where you travel, so the shape the group throws matches the video — the very thing most bedroom-learned covers gloss straight over.

Called in Plain Numbers

Every count is a number, nothing more, so there is no Korean to learn and no history to bone up on — just routines broken down into pieces you can genuinely get hold of.

Filmed the Way Idols Are

Each class can end on a camera take, echoing the way the groups themselves clean up a cover — and it is the fastest way to see your sync and spacing sharpen week to week.

Your K-Pop Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Weeks 1–4

Your First Chunks

Eased In

A few sections of a current release, taught well below speed, so a complete beginner never gets left behind by the track.

Bring Along

Clothes you can move sharply in and trainers with grip — the feet flip direction fast once the tempo climbs.

Month 2–3

Sharp and Together

Full Speed

Those sections push up to true tempo, loaded with the tight freezes and heavy accents that snap the style into focus.

Keeping Your Place

Staying nailed to your spot while the formation collapses and blooms again between verse and chorus.

Month 4–6

The Full Thing

One Whole Routine

The complete piece run in one unbroken go, verse sliding into chorus without a visible join.

One Body

Lining your angle, height and timing up with everyone else until the group reads like one dancer photocopied.

Month 6+

Ready for the Camera

Covers Worth Posting

Camera runs and complete covers polished enough that putting one online stops feeling like a risk.

In the Crowd

By this stage you are part of the K-pop crowd Portsmouth already had, moving easily between our class and whatever else is on.

K-Pop in Portsmouth FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Is this the same as the University of Portsmouth K-Pop Society? +

No — they are two separate things. The University of Portsmouth K-Pop Society is student-run and members-only, and it follows the university's term calendar. Ours is a standalone public class with its own teacher and studio: the same real idol choreography, taken apart and rebuilt, but with no membership, no student status and no term dates in the way.

Do I need to be able to dance already? +

Not in the slightest. Every move is cut into small pieces and taken well below tempo before we push the speed, so total beginners keep up. Almost everyone in the room started from nothing, exactly where you are.

Where in Portsmouth are the K-pop classes? +

At partner studios near the University Quarter and Guildhall Walk — handy for students and everyone else — a short step from Portsmouth & Southsea station. We confirm the exact room once you have booked.

What does a K-pop class in Portsmouth cost? +

A single class is £8, paid on the day, with no sign-up. When the class settles into a regular weekly time we bring in cheaper blocks, and a private session brought to your own group is quoted on its own terms.

Do I have to know any Korean? +

None at all — the counts are called as plain numbers. You absorb the movement and the timing; the words of the song never turn into homework.

Which groups and songs do you teach? +

A rolling mix of new and older idol routines, girl groups and boy groups alike, agreed with the class. Give it a few weeks and your requests genuinely count.

Will we be filmed? +

Only when the group is happy to — we film a short run at the close, the way idols sharpen a cover. It is easily the quickest way to watch your spacing and timing come good.

Is it actually a workout? +

More than newcomers expect. The nonstop sharp movement and constant formation changes get your heart going properly — most people show up for the songs and leave having done real cardio by accident.

How old do you have to be to join? +

There is no upper limit at all — adults of every age are welcome. Under-18s dance in their own supervised age groups, so younger fans have a place too.
