Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ground up
Feet, ankles and spine woken gently, weight settled evenly — the unglamorous foundations every beautiful line stands on.
At the barre
Pliés, tendus and rises with the barre for support, warming the joints in ballet's time-honoured order.
Positions and port de bras
The five positions and the carriage of the arms, mirror-checked and French-named until the vocabulary starts sticking.
Centre practice
The same shapes attempted away from the barre, plus a travelling chassé — where borrowed balance becomes your own.
A dancing finish
A short sequence to piano joins the evening's work together, closed with a révérence to the room.
About Ballet Classes in Lincoln
Ask around Lincoln and you will hear the same thing our enquiry inbox says: the city's dance schools serve children superbly — Rhythm in Movement, Go Dance and their peers run full graded programmes — but an adult who simply wants to start ballet from nothing, without a syllabus or a term commitment, has had thin options. This class is the answer: adults only, absolute beginners first, £8 a time.
Expect the real thing, scaled kindly. Pliés and tendus at the barre in the order a body wants them; the five positions and their French names introduced without hurry; posture rebuilt from the feet up. Ballet's gift to adults is not performance — it is carriage, control and an hour of complete focus that leaves the day outside the studio door.
We teach in the Lower City, level walking from Lincoln station and the High Street. And if a term of barre work leaves you standing taller on Steep Hill than the tourists — that is simply a local benefit the syllabus never mentions.

Why Choose Ballet in Lincoln?
Posture as a side effect
Barre work quietly rebuilds how you stand, sit and walk — the benefit people notice within a month.
Strong without strain
Slow control builds deep leg and core strength with no impact — demanding muscles, gentle joints.
A portable vocabulary
Pliés and tendus mean the same in every studio on earth — learn once here, walk into any class anywhere.
£8 and no term fees
Adult ballet without enrolment, uniform lists or commitments — pay for the weeks you attend.
Your Ballet Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The alphabet
Positions take root
First through fifth become automatic destinations rather than diagrams to consult.
Balance finds its address
Weight learns to live over the balls of the feet, where all future balance is built.
Independence
Letting go of the barre
Shapes stand up unsupported in the centre — modest-looking, enormously satisfying.
Turnout without force
Rotation from the hips at your own range — the honest version that protects knees for the long haul.
Motion
Steps that travel
Chassés and balancés carry you across the studio with ballet's even, gliding quality.
Arms finish the picture
Port de bras stops trailing and starts completing each movement, quiet shoulders included.
Dancing proper
Sequences with music
Enchaînements marry the vocabulary to piano phrases, and the hour becomes recognisably ballet.
A discipline that keeps giving
Strength, carriage and a weekly hour of pure attention — the habit adults keep for decades.
Ballet in Lincoln FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
I am in my forties/fifties/sixties — is it too late for ballet? +
Not remotely. Adult-beginner ballet is a growing movement nationally for a reason: the technique scales to any starting body, and our Lincoln room spans several decades most weeks.
Is this connected to the children's ballet schools in Lincoln? +
No — Lincoln's established schools do graded children's work well, and we happily point families their way. Ours is the separate adults-only beginners' hour the city was missing.
What does a class cost? +
£8 flat on the night. No term fees, no enrolment, no uniform to buy.
What do I wear with no ballet kit? +
Leggings or anything stretchy with a fitted top, and socks or bare feet to start. Soft ballet shoes are an inexpensive later upgrade, never a first-week requirement.
Where is the class? +
Central Lincoln, Lower City side — level ground from the station and High Street, exact studio confirmed on booking.
Do I need any dance background at all? +
None. The class begins at first position and first plié and assumes the whole room is new — repetition and patience are the method.
Will I get to dance on pointe? +
No — and no honest beginner class would offer it. Pointe requires years of preparatory strength; we work in soft shoes on flat and demi-pointe, which is where genuine ballet training starts.
Is ballet actually good exercise? +
Deceptively so — the slow control works legs, feet and core harder than it appears, and regulars report posture and strength changes within weeks.
How do I start? +
Fill in the enquiry form and we will send the current class night, time and address within a working day. Then just arrive in something stretchy.
