Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Ankles Awake
A standing warm-up for ankles, calves and knees, then straight into single sounds — heel drops and toe taps that tune your ears as much as your feet.
Steps of the Week
Shuffles, flaps, ball changes and — soon enough — time steps, broken down slowly and repeated until the sounds come out clean rather than approximate.
Stacking the Sequence
The session's steps stacked into a short rhythmic sequence set to music, from swing to pop — tap is percussion you dance, and this is the drum solo.
Speed & Clarity
The combination again at rising tempo, with the focus on making every beat audible — one clean sound beats five muddy ones, and your feet learn the difference here.
Groove-Down
A relaxed final run-through, a few bars of call-and-response with the teacher's feet, and a proper calf stretch — tomorrow's legs will be grateful.
About Tap Classes in Birmingham
Tap dance classes in Birmingham live exactly where they should: on the Southside, the theatre district around Hurst Street where the Hippodrome hosts the big touring musicals. Learning time steps a few streets from stages where tap still earns ovations lends the whole thing a sense of occasion — partner studio addresses are confirmed when you book.
Beginners are the target audience here, not a tolerated minority. You will make real, satisfying noise in your first session, and no previous dance of any kind is expected. No tap shoes yet either — start in hard-soled shoes, and we can point you toward borrowing and hire options before you invest in a pair of your own.
Classes run for adults, teens and children, and tap suits every one of those ages for the same reason: it is rhythm made physical. It sharpens musicality, balance and ankle strength while sounding fantastic — and Birmingham audiences raised on Hippodrome musicals already know what good tap sounds like.

Why Choose Tap in Birmingham?
Theatre District Home
Classes based around Southside, Birmingham's theatre quarter — tap taught in the neighbourhood where the touring musicals land.
You Are the Percussion
Tap is the only class where you are the band — rhythm, timing and your musical ear improve even on the days your feet feel slow.
All Ages, Genuinely
Children's and teen groups run alongside the adult sessions, with DBS-checked teachers on the younger classes — tap is one of the best first dances a kid can learn.
No Shoes, No Barrier
Start in hard-soled shoes from your own wardrobe; hire and borrow options come before you ever need to buy a pair.
Your Tap Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Making Sound
Getting Started
The tap alphabet — flaps, shuffles, ball changes — plus the surprising discovery that your ears are learning as fast as your feet.
What to Wear
Comfortable clothes plus hard-soled shoes to begin. Ask us about borrowing or hiring tap shoes before buying — your first pair should be an informed purchase.
Steps With History
The Classics
Single and double time steps — steps a century of tappers built on — plus your first paddle-and-roll: moves with names your grandparents would recognise.
Cleaner Every Week
The focus shifts from making sounds to choosing them — clarity, dynamics and landing the beat dead centre.
Faster Feet
Building Speed
Pullbacks, wings for the brave, and combinations at performance tempo — the stage where tap starts feeling like an instrument you actually play.
Styles of Tap
Broadway show tap and rhythm tap both get attention, so you find out where your own taste sits.
Feet That Talk
Advanced Practice
Improvised rhythm phrases, trading bars with other dancers, longer routines — musicianship expressed entirely through your feet.
What Comes Next
Showcase opportunities, faster classes, or a night at the Hippodrome hearing the professionals with a newly expert ear.
Tap in Birmingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Whereabouts in Birmingham are the tap classes? +
In and around Southside — the Hurst Street theatre district — at partner studios; the exact address comes with your registration confirmation. New Street is a short walk away, and the Arcadian car park is close for anyone who has to drive.
How much is a tap class in Birmingham? +
£8 drop-in, pay-as-you-go, no membership. Discounted blocks follow once your studio's weekly timetable is settled — and the kids' sessions are priced the same way.
Can I start tap with zero dance background? +
Completely. Tap's building blocks — shuffles, taps, heel drops — need no prior dancing, just a willingness to make noise in public, which turns out to be the fun part. Most of our beginners have never taken a dance class of any kind.
Do I need my own tap shoes to start? +
No — come in hard-soled shoes and comfortable clothes and you will get plenty from the session. When you are ready to commit, we will steer you to hire and borrow options first, then to buying, in that order.
Is tap a good class for children? +
One of the best: it builds rhythm, coordination and confidence, and kids adore being loud on purpose. Kids' and teen groups have their own sessions apart from the adults, with DBS-checked teachers — just choose the age band when you enquire.
Is tap a good workout? +
Sneakily, yes — it is cardio for the calves and a balance challenge throughout, low-impact compared with jumping-based styles but never passive. Expect to feel yesterday's class in your lower legs, pleasantly.
What music do you tap to? +
Everything from swing standards to current pop — tap sits happily on any track with a solid beat. Part of the fun is hearing a chart song on the radio and mentally tapping the rhythm before class does it for real.
Is there an upper age limit for tap? +
The adult classes in Birmingham run right up to 75, and adult tap is having a quiet boom precisely because it suits every age — kind to joints, brilliant for balance and memory, and impossible to do with a straight face.
Will I have to perform? +
Only ever by choice. Showcase chances exist for those who want them, and everyone else claps from the audience with zero pressure — plenty of lifelong tappers never set foot on a stage and enjoy every minute.
