Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Breath & Release Warm-Up
Spine rolls, arm swings and breath-led movement to soften the day out of your shoulders. Contemporary starts from letting go, not holding on.
Technique Block
Contractions, curves, weight shifts and controlled off-balance moments — the release-technique fundamentals that make the style look effortless later.
Floor & Travel
Safe floor-work basics — rolls, slides, low transitions — then travelling phrases across the room that join floor and standing into one line of movement.
The Repertoire
An expressive choreography section where the technique gets a story. Set to anything from stripped-back piano to alternative pop, and different every few weeks.
Improvisation & Cool-Down
A short guided improvisation task — always with a clear prompt, never a blank stare — followed by a long, grateful stretch.
About Contemporary Classes in Birmingham
Contemporary is the style dancers describe as the most honest: bare feet, breath, gravity and whatever you are carrying that day turned into movement. Our contemporary dance classes in Birmingham teach release technique, floor work and expressive choreography from absolute basics — no ballet history required, no interpretive-dance clichés indulged.
You will be dancing in a city that takes the art form seriously. Birmingham Royal Ballet is resident at the Hippodrome a few streets from our Southside partner studios, and the big touring dance productions pass through the same theatre district. Studio addresses — Southside and Digbeth — are confirmed when you book.
Practicalities: New Street station is minutes away on foot, the Metro trams cross the centre, and with the Clean Air Zone charging older cars the train is the sensible choice anyway. Wear layers, bring socks or dance barefoot, and expect to end the hour lying happily on the floor wondering where the week's tension went.

Why Choose Contemporary in Birmingham?
Technique Without Gatekeeping
Release technique, floor work and contact basics taught from zero. You do not need a ballet childhood — you need an hour a week and a pair of socks.
An Expressive Outlet
Contemporary is where movement meets feeling. Regulars call it therapy with better music — a genuine counterweight to a desk-shaped week.
Strength You Can Use
Floor work builds core, wrists and control like little else. Expect deeper mobility and quiet strength within a couple of months.
A Real Dance City
With a world-class ballet company resident at the Hippodrome and touring work passing through weekly, Birmingham gives you plenty to watch as well as do.
Your Contemporary Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
Trust the Floor
Getting Started
Breath, swings, curves and your first safe rolls. The floor stops being furniture and starts being a dance partner.
What to Wear
Layers you can peel off, leggings or joggers, and socks or bare feet — contemporary is danced without shoes.
Build the Language
Technique Deepens
Off-balance work, momentum and suspension — learning to fall with control, which is most of contemporary's magic.
First Phrases
Longer travelling sequences that link floor and standing work into something that finally feels like dancing.
Find Your Voice
Interpretation
The same phrase danced soft, sharp or spent — discovering that how you move says more than what you move.
Improvisation
Guided tasks become genuinely enjoyable rather than terrifying — usually around the month-four mark, like clockwork.
Deep Practice
Advanced Repertoire
Complex phrase work, partnering basics and choreography with real compositional structure.
What Comes Next
Showcase pieces, choreographing your own material, or simply a practice that keeps deepening — contemporary has no ceiling.
Contemporary in Birmingham FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
Where do the contemporary dance classes happen in Birmingham? +
At partner studios in the Southside theatre district and Digbeth, with the precise address confirmed once you book. Both areas are a short, flat walk from New Street — handy when you are leaving class pleasantly wobbly-legged.
What do contemporary classes in Birmingham cost? +
A drop-in session is £8, no strings — turn up, dance, decide later. Block-booking discounts open up as soon as the regular timetable for your studio is confirmed.
Do I need a dance background to start contemporary? +
No. Ballet training helps but is absolutely not assumed — our beginner sessions build release technique and floor work from nothing. Curiosity and a willingness to get on the floor are the only prerequisites.
What should I wear — and do I really dance barefoot? +
Yes, bare feet or socks; shoes stay by the wall. Wear leggings or joggers and breathable layers you can shed as you warm up. Knees appreciate leggings over shorts once floor work starts.
Is contemporary like the routines on TV talent shows? +
Related, but broader. TV contemporary is a polished, emotional slice of a much bigger art form. In class you get the full toolkit — release technique, floor work, improvisation, composition — and then you can be as televisual as you like.
How physically demanding is it? I am not very flexible. +
Flexibility is an outcome, not an entry requirement. Classes scale to the bodies in the room, and floor work is taught progressively so wrists, knees and backs are looked after. You will be stiff the first week and stronger by the fourth.
Is the improvisation part scary? +
It is the bit beginners dread and regulars refuse to skip. Every improvisation is guided by a concrete task — follow your hand, stay low, move only on the breath — so there is never a spotlight and never a wrong answer.
Am I too old for contemporary dance? +
Our adult classes run from 17 to 75 and contemporary suits the full span — it works with the body you bring, not the body a syllabus imagines. Several of our most expressive dancers came to it past fifty.
Are there performance opportunities in Birmingham? +
Yes — optional studio showcases for those who want a stage, and choreography projects as you progress. Watching is part of the training too, and with the Hippodrome nearby the second city makes that easy.
