Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Placement and Isolations

A thorough warm-up runs into head, shoulder, rib and hip isolations — building the controlled, tidy base the rest of the hour depends on.

10–25 mins

Technique Drills

Jazz walks, kick lines, pivots and the groundwork for pirouettes, rehearsed in short repeatable sets — the sort of steady practice that lifts your technique a clear step each week.

25–40 mins

Travelling Combos

Chassés, leaps and turning runs that carry you across the room with the long-limbed reach and attack that make jazz read from the back.

40–50 mins

This Week's Routine

A theatre-flavoured jazz routine taught in sections, then layered with dynamics, character and the performance face jazz insists on.

50–60 mins

Full-Out and Stretch

The routine performed full-out, twice over, because the second run is always sharper — then a long, well-earned stretch to finish.

About Jazz Classes in Liverpool

Jazz is the engine room of musical theatre, and our jazz dance classes in Liverpool teach it a short walk from where the touring shows land. The Liverpool Empire on Lime Street is the country's largest two-tier auditorium, so the West End productions rolling through town are danced in exactly this vocabulary — you can drill it in class and watch it earn a living on stage the same week.

Expect kicks, turns, leaps and crisp isolations, taught with genuine technique beneath the sparkle. Jazz is the style that quietly sharpens every other one you touch — tap, commercial, contemporary and show routines all lean on it — which is why it's the shrewdest single class for anyone who wants to be a genuinely rounded dancer instead of a one-trick one.

None of it is gated behind experience, flexibility or jazz shoes — clean trainers and a little nerve will see you through the opening month. The main class runs 17 to 75, junior and teen groups sit separately under DBS-checked teachers, and at £8 a drop-in, trying it out costs less than a night in the Empire stalls.

Why Choose Jazz in Liverpool?

Minutes From the Empire

Learn the vocabulary in the studio, then watch the Empire's touring casts spend it on the country's biggest two-tier stage down the road.

The Style That Lifts the Rest

A term of jazz cleans up your lines, tightens your turns and sharpens your timing in every other style you dance — think of it as an upgrade applied across the board.

Strength and Stretch, Built In

Kicks, leaps and floor work build genuine strength and flexibility bit by bit — no need to bring any; the class grows it for you.

Performing From Day One

We coach each routine as a little performance from the very first week, so your stage presence comes up in step with the choreography rather than trailing years behind it.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

Week 1–4

Clean Foundations

Getting Started

Isolations, jazz walks and a first short combination — precision and tidy shapes before anyone chases height or speed.

What to Wear

Fitted, stretchy clothes and clean trainers or bare feet. Jazz shoes can wait; we'll point out when they're worth buying.

Month 2–3

Turns Click

Technique

Pirouette prep starts paying off, kicks climb, and travelling work turns from the scary part of class into the fun part.

Musicality

Playing movement against the music — the accent, the hold, the snap — which is where jazz finds its sense of humour.

Month 4–6

Dynamics

Range

Sharper contrast between smooth and percussive, longer combinations, and choreography that visits classic, lyrical and commercial jazz.

Conditioning

Leaps land softer, balances hold longer, kicks sit higher — the class's built-in strength work compounds around now.

Month 6+

Stage-Ready

Advanced Practice

Full-length routines with intent and character — dancing designed to carry to the very back of a theatre.

What Comes Next

Stack our commercial, tap or contemporary classes on the jazz base, chase audition-standard training, or just be the best mover at every wedding.

Jazz in Liverpool FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Where in Liverpool are the jazz dance classes? +

At partner studios in the city centre and Ropewalks, near the Empire and Lime Street, with the exact address confirmed on booking. The Merseyrail loop at Central and Lime Street puts you minutes away.

How much is a jazz class in Liverpool? +

A drop-in costs £8 and that's the lot — no sign-up fee, no contract. Once your studio's weekly timetable firms up, discounted block bookings come in as well.

Do I need dance experience to start jazz? +

Not a bit. The beginners' class starts from scratch — if you can walk in time to music you already have the raw material, and everything else is taught rather than expected.

What should I wear, and do I need jazz shoes? +

Stretchy, close-fitting kit you can throw a kick in, plus clean trainers or bare feet. Jazz shoes only become worthwhile later on, and we'll give you the nod when they're worth the money.

Do I need to be flexible? +

You need the willingness to stretch, not a gymnast's hamstrings. Flexibility comes on gradually through each warm-up and cool-down, and kicks are set at whatever height your legs give on the day.

Is jazz dance the same as jazz music? +

They're related by history — jazz dance came up alongside jazz music around a century back — but today's class soundtracks hop from big-band swing to show tunes to current pop, whatever the routine calls for.

What's the difference between jazz and contemporary? +

Jazz is upright, crisp and aimed at the audience — the musical-theatre look. Contemporary works closer to the ground, softer and more flowing, chasing weight and release over sharp lines. We run both classes, and a good few dancers happily do the two.

Am I too old to start jazz dance? +

Not at all — the main class runs 17 to 75 and we mean the top end. Jazz bends to suit the body you walk in with; every jump and kick comes with a gentler alternative that still looks like jazz.

Could this lead to performing? +

Easily, if you'd like it to. Jazz is what most musical-theatre auditions are danced in, so the door is open — and our keener class dancers get the early tip-off about showcases and events. Equally, there's zero obligation; most people are just here for the love of it.
