Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0:00

Wake-Up & Isolations

We rouse the body and work the isolations — the ribs alone, then the hips, then the shoulders. Picture it as jazz spelling out its alphabet.

0:12

Down The Floor

Jazz walks, chassés and pas de bourrée running corner to corner, laying in the clean lines and the travel no routine can do without.

0:26

Kicks & Turns

A careful first meeting with the pirouette and the kick — spotting so the head stays steady, and steering the leg up instead of hurling it.

0:40

This Week's Routine

A short theatre-jazz combination lands over a musical-theatre or pop track, brimming with attack and taught one eight-count at a stretch.

0:53

Show It & Stretch

The routine runs as a group with proper stage voltage, then we wind down on the deep stretches that keep jazz muscles long and sound.

About Jazz Classes in Watford

Think of jazz as the connective tissue of the dance world — the technique quietly holding up musical theatre, commercial numbers and a good slice of everything that tours the Watford Palace Theatre on Clarendon Road each season. Our jazz classes in Watford are the way in: the isolations, the turns, the leaps and that unmistakable performance bite that let you drop into almost any choreography a step ahead. It is flashy, it is exacting, and it turns out to be far more fun than all that precision would suggest.

As a town to pick it up in, Watford has real form. Aviv Dance Studios runs jazz beside its street and commercial work, giving the style a proper local base, while the newly reopened Watford Colosseum and the Edwardian Palace Theatre lay on stages worth aiming at — the Colosseum threw its doors open again in 2025 and the Palace has backed new work for well over a hundred years. We point to that scene rather than tie ourselves to it, but it does mean the vocabulary you assemble with us is the one working dancers across Hertfordshire already share.

Nobody is going anywhere near the splits on day one. A beginner opens on posture, jazz walks and isolating one body part in turn — ribs, then shoulders, then hips — long before pirouettes, kicks and those crisp, off-beat combinations jazz is adored for get layered in. A drop-in is £8, cleared each session with not a thing to sign, so one evening a week can quietly buy you the nerve to enjoy an audience.

Why Choose Jazz in Watford?

The Root Technique

Because jazz underpins musical theatre and commercial dance, whatever you construct here carries almost straight into every other style going.

A Stage Presence

We drill performance as much as steps — the projection and edge that carry clear to the back row of a house like the Palace.

Longer, Stronger Line

Isolations, kicks and turns grow core control and a supple, extended line, and not a single dull stretch drill in sight while they do it.

£8, Strings-Free

Pay by the session, sign nothing. Turn up weekly, drop by monthly, or test out one class alone and judge how it suits you.

Your Jazz Journey

From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.

1

First Session

One Part At A Time

Isolations feel peculiar and then curiously moreish — come the end of your first class the ribs pop and the shoulders roll on command.

Chase The Attack

Jazz runs on intent. We coach you to snap a move shut rather than let it drift off, and the change in how you read is immediate.

2

Weeks 2–4

Travel And Spin

Down-the-floor work hands you jazz walks that swallow distance and a first controlled single pirouette landed over a clean spot.

Hearing The Music

You get onto the accents in the track instead of skating over the top of them — the very gap between doing steps and performing.

3

Weeks 5–8

Fuller Combinations

Routines swell into whole 32-count runs with kicks, spins and level changes that honestly begin to look like a number off a stage.

Tidy Lines

We hone the fine print — pointed feet, lifted chest, sharp arms — so the whole thing comes across finished rather than roughly there.

4

Ongoing

Perform Without Nerves

Choreography goes in fast and you keep your feet in a group number without a soul calling the counts out for you anymore.

Spread Outward

Jazz unlocks the rest — dancers ride it into musical theatre, commercial and heels work right across the Watford scene.

Jazz in Watford FAQ

Everything you need to know before your first class.

Do I need dance experience to start jazz? +

None. The beginners class opens on posture, jazz walks and isolating one part of the body at a time, which makes an outright first-timer precisely its target.

How flexible do I need to be? +

Barely at all to begin with. Jazz grows your flexibility as you go — we never call for kicks or splits your body has not reached yet, and the warm-up is always thorough.

What is the difference between jazz and street or commercial? +

Jazz is the technical bedrock — the lines, turns, kicks and theatrical bite — that commercial and musical-theatre routines get built over. Nail jazz and the rest arrives far more readily.

What should I wear? +

Fitted, stretchy kit you can move and be seen in, together with jazz shoes, ballet-style pumps or clean socks on a sprung floor. Leave the baggy layers that swallow your lines.

How much is a class? +

Each drop-in is £8, cleared per session. No joining fee, no block and no contract — you cover only the classes you genuinely turn up to.

Where are the classes held? +

In a confirmed Watford studio, either central near Clarendon Road and the High Street or over on the Cassiobury side. The precise spot, plus parking and directions, is sent through once you book.

How do I get there? +

There is no tram, but the Tube does serve Watford as the Metropolitan line's terminus, and Watford Junction runs fast trains to Euston in about fifteen minutes. Travel and parking notes come attached to your confirmation.

Are you affiliated with Aviv or the Watford Palace Theatre? +

No. They get named because they make Watford such a strong place to learn jazz, but we keep no partnership with Aviv, the Palace Theatre or the Colosseum.

Can I book jazz for a group or celebration? +

Certainly — a theatre-jazz session works a treat as a one-off for a birthday, a work social or a hen group. We take those anywhere across Watford and south-west Herts; just give us your numbers.
