Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-up with intent
Isolations, stretches and travelling walks performed like they're already onstage — jazz warm-ups refuse anonymity.
Technique block
Jazz walks, kick mechanics, pirouette preparation — classic vocabulary at adult-beginner pace with scaled options throughout.
Corner to corner
Travelling combinations across the floor: step-ball-changes into turns into kicks, technique stitched into momentum.
The number
A month-long theatrical routine grows a section each week — by the fourth class it performs start to finish.
Full-out and stretch
The routine at performance energy — jazz has no other setting — then hamstrings get their overdue negotiation.
About Jazz Classes in Wakefield
Jazz is show-dance's skeleton: the kicks, turns and stylised walks holding up every musical, cruise spectacular and half of television. Our Wakefield class teaches it as living technique for adults — proper turn preparation, kick mechanics that respect hamstrings, and a monthly routine with theatrical polish. £8, city centre, delusions of stardom actively encouraged.
The city gives the style a fitting backdrop: Wakefield's Theatre Royal is the smallest surviving auditorium Frank Matcham ever designed, a jewel-box stage that has kept the town in musicals since 1894 — and our register is stocked with people who watch there and secretly wanted the other side of the footlights. This class is that side, one hour a week.
If you can walk with purpose, jazz will take you from there. Flexibility is developed on the instalment plan; the splits remain optional at every stage.

Why Choose Jazz in Wakefield?
Show technique, honest price
The vocabulary professionals audition with — kicks, turns, presentation — for £8 a week from a standing start.
Progressive flexibility
Range builds weekly through structured stretch — where your kicks finish today is simply where we begin.
£8, feet as found
Bare feet or clean trainers cover the early weeks; jazz shoes become worthwhile around month two, and we advise before you buy.
Performance habit
Jazz insists on being watchable — chin up, eyes front. The habit follows you into meetings and photographs.
Your Jazz Journey
From first class to confident dancer — here is how it usually goes.
The opening block
Walks and lines
Travelling with stylised intent, finishing phrases in clean positions — the mirror starts approving.
Turn foundations
Spotting and passé make single pirouettes plausible, then occasional, then reliable.
Months two and three
Kicks with engineering
Height arrives from mechanics rather than hope; hamstrings adjust their expectations upward.
A finished number
The monthly routine performs clean end to end — your first complete piece of show choreography.
The half year
Doubles and dynamics
Double pirouettes land more often than not, and your dancing gains the sharp-soft contrast that reads from row Z.
Audition-speed learning
Combinations absorb fast enough to survive an am-dram dance call — several regulars have proven it.
The long run
Stages, optionally
Local musical societies and showcase nights welcome trained beginners — or the skills simply upgrade every party you attend.
The base layer
Jazz underlies commercial, theatre and heels work — this training makes every other class easier.
Jazz in Wakefield FAQ
Everything you need to know before your first class.
What's the cost and venue for jazz in Wakefield? +
£8 flat per class at a central studio walkable from both stations — same price for drop-ins and block bookers, address confirmed when you book.
I haven't danced since school — is that a problem? +
It's the standard entry profile — the class is built for adult beginners, every move has a starter version, and progress is measured against your own last month only.
How flexible do I need to be? +
Exactly as flexible as you currently are — range is built weekly through structured stretching. The splits are a possible destination, never a requirement.
What goes on my feet? +
Bare feet or clean flexible trainers to start; soft jazz shoes (about £15) earn their keep once turns arrive, and we'll point at the right pair first.
Is this only for musical-theatre types? +
Half the room has zero stage ambitions and simply wants exercise with production values — the other half is quietly rehearsing for something. The class serves both without asking which you are.
Jazz versus contemporary — what's the difference? +
Jazz projects outward — audience-facing lines, syncopation, showmanship — while contemporary turns inward toward weight and breath. Ours is the theatrical branch, spiritual home: a Matcham auditorium.
What music do you use? +
Show tunes, swing, funk and modern tracks with theatrical bones — the style was born from jazz music but has danced with everything since.
Can jazz be booked for a group or hen? +
Yes — a Fosse-flavoured group session is a spectacular party booking, run under the flat-rate format with its own page. The weekly class is where the technique lives.
How do I begin? +
Enquire below with your start week. £8, stretchy clothes, and whatever stage face you've been practising — we'll put technique underneath it.
